Fixing vs. replacing Merc trim sensor

One of the wires on my starboard side trim sensors finally popped off.. corroded through. It sat totally open since when I bought the boat a year ago, so I know it doesn't matter if the wires are sealed or not.

Which leads me to wonder.. instead of buying another sensor, removing the entire out drive and re-running the wires all through the transom.. Why couldn't I just crimp on some extensions to the existing wires, and pop open the sensor and reconnect? Any thoughts?

Either cut off and do not use the wires and sender at all... or bite the bullet and buy a new sender. Most people just do without.

Why can't you just fix the thing?

Usually if the wire is corroded in one place, it is corroded all the way through. Try it and see how it works!
