Re: floor restoration

Put on a respirator, not a dust mask, first thing. Use a small grinder for the tight spots, and a circular saw for the long runs. Set the depth of the saw to just the thickness of the floor. It is a good idea to drill a test hole through the floor first to determine the thickness. Cut it out all the way around.

Good Luck. Read the posts in this topic heading, lots of great information here.

Re: floor restoration

wow! i should have expected it, the foam is all saturated and the stringers are rotten. this is going to be more exciting than i thought! now i will have to make this as strong as i can. if this much is bad i wonder how well the motor is mounted? maybe i will be able to replace the whole thing. at least i won't have to worry about something that i have not tore apart.

Re: floor restoration

Jesters, I started with a small soft spot in the bow 4 months ago. As of today, I have just finished glassing in the new floor above 1 new stringer. When you start tearing out...you are going to find alot of new rot. Right now, I have consumed 3 bags of fiber cloth, 1 gallon of resin, 2 4x8 sheets of treated ply, 1 sheet of pine ply and seems like 1 million man hours and more iching than posion ivy on a bad day. But to try to answer your question, I used a 4" angle grinder with a steel cutting blade. Worked wonders. Becarefull not to grind through the hull.
And studlymandingo is right! Use a respirator, I used a dust mask and wondered why I was cauffing up blood! Yes, thats right. After the fiberglass grinding and sanding was over, all symptoms were gone. Anyway, fiberglass resin burns lie a bad STD so buy a box of gloves. I was more instrested in speed than safety and paid the price. As of 4/14, I was grinding more fiber in flip-flops and slipped and now have a narly gash in my toe from the grinder. The good thing is, im throwing a boat carpeting party this weekend to have other people carpet it. If you need and/or want any more tips, search this forum. Your questions have been answered 1,000 times. You can also e-mail me at jsturkie@sc.rr.com if you can't find some info!

Re: floor restoration

thanks for the advice. i have been using the respirator, it works great but the goggles i have seem to fog up so quick that i can only grind for about five mins at a time. this is nasty stuff. been reading in the foam forum, there are a lot of great opinions on whether to or not to use it. my boat is 19'6 i do not plan on taking it in the ocean. tillamook bay to do some crabbing, but mostly some springer fishing (if they open it up this year on the columbia river)some fall chinook and sturgeon. boat will stay on rivers and lakes and thats it. so should i or should'nt i?

Re: floor restoration

looks like you're doing a good job so far, keep the pics updated.

On the foam, I did a restoration a few years back and put foam only in the gunwales. The theory there is the foam wouldn't sit in water, but would still keep the boat from sinking if you swamped out.

Re: floor restoration

SRV, wonderful work. You are going to have a boat that you can be proud of! Shareaproject is a great site isn't it. Anyway, by now, I have the bow compartments completed and glassed. The light at the end of the tunnel is in sight. Next is carpet and seats and I'm on the water. Good luck on your project! If you make it this far south, Drop her in in Beaufort SC and we will have some fun!
