I may buy a boat in Florida to bring home in Alabama. The boat has a title but the trailer does not. This will not be a problem in Alabama. Will I have a problem towing in Florida (about 50 miles).

Re: Florida titles

Hi Tbird....

In Florida, only the boat has a "Title". The trailer just gets a "Registration". The boat title needs to be kept in a safe place at home or safe deposit box, etc. Along with the boat title, you should get from the State a small (maybe postcard size) document with your name and address and description of the boat (make, model, serial number, etc.) which serves to prove ownership. That, along with the trailer registration document should make you legal....

Hope that helps. If I'm wrong, I'm sure another FL boat owner will correct me...

Just some clarification of what you've said:

The trailer would have had a registration card that corresponds to the trailer's tag...and in Florida the tag belongs to the original owner, and that tag (and paper registration) would remain with the seller. What the buyer needs to travel in Florida will be a Bill of Sale describing the trailer. It also is wise to record the original tag number to show any cop that asks for current registration. He can 'punch' it up, and see that your boat title shows the same seller's name as your trailer Bill of Sale.

Happy boating!

The State of Florida would like all sellers of all registered vehicles to do this:
Go here:
http://www.flhsmv.gov/dmv/protect.html
Print the two forms out follow the instructions.
After filling them out make sure both the seller and buyer has a copy of both.
