on another post i stated water in the gear oil. i have drained it now for over 24 hours now and still hasnt givin up all the oil because the old stuff is so thick. i actually pumped in new stuff to try and remove the sludge ,but it still has the old ooze coming out. is there a product that could clean the lower unit out completly? my goal is to replace the oil and seals around fill and drain holes and then take to the water so that later i can re-check to see if water is still getting in. thanks in advance for any advice!! you guys are great!!!!!!

p.s. the motor is an evinrude 7.5 hp 1958! also can you tell me how much oil it should take to fill. I bought the pump that threads onto the oil container as well as the fill hole. with the drain hole closed and me pumping in oil how will i know when its full because i dont see a vent hole. thanks again.

When you fill do it from the lower hole. When it comes out the top its full. Put the top plug in first. The vacume will allow you to put lower one in without loosing to much. I would try diesel fuel for flushing.

There isn't much that will cut that stuff loose. Here is what I do. I drain like you did and refill and run it a few trips and drain it again. After about the second time draining it useually comes clean. Expensive , not that bad. Works? yes

Just a thought and a question for those who know more... I was told that "in the old days" grease was used in L/U's rather than gear oil. Could this be the case here? Very old grease? I would think the remedy would be the same though.
