Been working on an1988 XR4. Doing a few extra things on the cooling.I have had problems with it over heating. After replacing the water pump the pressure is still low (3 to 8 psi). Thinking of a way to flushing from the top down. Can this be done by adapting a water hose to top where the water pressure gage connects to the engine and pushing water into the system? Removing the foot, could this help remove any blockage?

That water pressure is not very far off, if any. Have you checked the thermostats? Have you rebuilt the poppet valve? How do you know you have a clogged cooling system? Is it a saltwater motor?

I have replaced therostats and poppet valve. The overheat alarm is going off. Replaced head gaskets ( the ones that were in it were good). Blows steam out the pee hole. In the process of replacing fuel lines and water hoses. Any suggestions?

Re: flushing motor

On my old IL6 the water tube was crushed where it went into the exhaust extension. The Merc guy I bought the replacement from said the salt does that. I know of no way to test for it.......

This boat has never been in salt water. After taking the foot off, I may try to flush down thru the stats first. I am not sure about tapping to the water pressure plug being so close to the stator.

Remove leg and tstats.Place bucket under motor.Flush with hose from bottom tube till tstats overflow(to stir it up) then flush from tstat and repeat a few time.Check bucket for debris.I found sand and some larger bits of sea shells in mine.Did this with engine warm. Also check all hoses for blockages.

The passageways in the exhaust cover may be stopped up as this is where the heads get their cooling from....

How many bolts hold your poppet cover on???? You should have a hose off poppet cover feeding back into top of engine.

Re: flushing motor

To push water up to the stats I assume you attach a water hose to the water sleeve with the foot off and run water upward. Sounds like a good idea. How did you warm the engine with the foot off? I will try it next week.As for the poppett valve there are 4 boalts holding it on, and there is no hose on the cover. Do you think I should take the poppett cover off when I flush the system out?

Re: flushing motor

Motor was run on muffs for 10 min before removing leg.
I havnt removed poppet yet cause now cooling fine at idle.I will be removing poppet as im running cold at WOT.
Remove poppet and check nothing blocking flow.Sometimes old seal/washer falls in hole and restricts flow.

I took the foot off today and noticed a dry layer of what appears to be sut. Not a greasy coat but more like exhaust discharge. I did not notice this when we put the water pump on last year. Any ideas?

I ran water in one of the termastats and the water flowed thru the water tube that connects to the foot. Ran water into the other stat and water seemed to flow thru the water tube and where I think the exaust that goes to the foot. Should this be normal?
