Really no reason to flush it out, let it drain for a day and then refill.

Re: Flushing out gear box...??

I flush mine out with regular old motor oil, squirted into the top hole until it runs clean out of the bottom. Note that there is NO NEED to do this with a properly sealed gearcase and you're just doing the annual oil change. Mine all leak to various degrees and I'm too darn lazy to take them off and seal them up, so I just change the gear oil every time I take it out. My 40 is an old saltwater engine with a split lower case that is quite pitted and I really don't want to try to get into it unless I absolutely have to. It's at the "dark brown milkshake" phase with no signs ever of separation, so I just change it when I get back.

If it is NOT an electric shift, then use 85-90W Marine grade gear oil. It is the same thing as that used in car differentials, but it supposedly has additives to help with water intrusion.

Re: Flushing out gear box...??

Electric Shift models take a special type of gearcase oil. It's a Type C Electric Shift Oil. it might be tough to find it anywhere, but at your local outboard dealer. A parts house might sell it, but a lot of those guys don't know squat about outboards, just cars.

Your model is the last year of 40hp Lark built. The following year Lark was the "newly designed" 50hp looper with twin carbs. I like the older style like what you have though. A lot simpler to work on and right now, these models are a dime a dozen. If that lower unit ever craps out on you, you can easily find a manual shift model for under $100 and swap parts over to it, to make it run. Your type of motor has been in production since 1958 and they were a workhorse.

Hello again..

Well, thanks for all the info on the gear oil etc....Yep, my local West Marine has the Type C gear oil in stock so I can get the correct product....instead of the car oil I might have used if I hadn't asked you guys...!!
Thanks again.
