Flushing question

Hi to all,

I've just bought an old Pride ski boat with a 40hp Evinrude. Its a pull start model and starts everytime first pull (the compression is rather strong).

After running it for the 1st time and bringing it home to flush, I could not find a suitable flush point in the motor other than the small hole just under the exhaust vent right above the prop. Even then when I put the hose to it, it didnt seem to push water up through the engine. It just came out a small hole on the leg.

Does anyone have the proper procedure for this or am I needing an extra tool?

Thanks guys.

Re: Flushing question

Judging by your description of the water intake you will either need to get an old flushette adapter for running on hose or just use a suitable large container that will hold enough water to get the lower unit submerged enough to flush engine.Hopefully you have not damaged the waterpump impeller on your first attempt. They don't like being run dry for long.

Re: Flushing question

I was told that it is bad to run engines in a container as it can fill the cooling system with oil from the exhaust.

There is no real way to tell if I the water is going into the engine then going through and coming out the exhaust as you are holding the hose to the inlet under the exhaust and water is going everywhere.

Re: Flushing question

You run no significant risk running your engine with the leg in a container of water, Fubarman, as long as there is enough water to fill your cooling system.

Even if the water take up ingested some oil into the cooling system, what harm could it do? How much oil do you think would have to be in your container for the take up to get even a few ml into the engine?

Good luck. :)

Re: Flushing question

I had the same problem with a 1972 25 hp Evinrude where the intake was positioned in a place where the ears would not fit good, the water from the hose would shoot out the sides when turned on. It barly would take in water when flushing. I trimmed the ears down with scissors so the hose was almost directly shooting water in the intake. It works much better and easier than fillinf up a trashcan with water every time.

Re: Flushing question

fubarman,Another option that will reduce the ratio of exhaust oil in the flush barrel is to cut the barrel down to a specific height and constantly fill with a hose while running engine letting the excess water just overflow.

Re: Flushing question

Thanks for the info guys.

Its spring time for us here in Australia and the weather is absolutely perfect here and even more so on the Gold Coast. On average we get 300 days of sunshine a year. The best place in Australia to own a boat I reckon.
