What is the proper water to flush motor after salt water use. Do you just use the connection under the cowl and flush or hook up muffs and run the motor to flush it out?

Re: Flushing

I've always used muffs. My neighbor used the hose hook-up at the cowling with some salt-neutralizer. His Johnson is 8 years old and looks showroom shiny inside and out.

Re: Flushing

I was at the Yamaha dealer yesterday and was told all you do is hook into the hose attachment and let the water run for 15-20 minutes and it will backflush everything. DO NOT run the motor while hose is hooked in and backflushing. It will mess the waterpump up fighting the backflush. If you want to hear the motor run then use the muffs instead. I have to hold mine tight until the waterpump sucks the water up through and out the tell tale hole. Once it gets flowing up through it stays flowing usually. You may already ready know this but you have to twist the rectangle muffs so that they are vertical like the water intake holes are to get a good seal.

Re: Flushing

Thanks guys for the reply. I've heard not to run the motor when on the flushing connector.
