Hi? My force 120hp, 1995 outboard engine flywheel is not turning. It stuck. I tried to turn it by hand no luck, i tried to put a wrench on the top bolt on the flywheel to turn it no luck. The last time i ran the boat was about two months ago it ran fine and did very well in the water. Can home and run fresh water in the engine.

I took a spark plug and tried to turn it still no luck. How can i get the flywheel to move and how can i prevent this from happening.

Thanks

Re: Flywheel not turning

something is broken. If the flywheel isnt turning, the crank isnt turning. if the crank isnt turning, the pistons are not moving.

I havent even gotten to the drive portion yet and you get the idea.

could be anything from a bad bearing, to bad crank to stuck/broken pistons to bad bearings in the drive.

I would start by pulling all the plugs and look in each plug hole at the pistons.

Does it move at all?
Any rust on the plugs?
Is the starter bendix engaged/stuck in place?
Check the oil in the lower.Good?
Any water or shavings?
Drop the lower unit and see if it's locked.
Profile/location? You might be close to someone who can help.

i did not try to turn it with the starter or i did not try to turn it with the ignition. i was using my hand because i was trying to spray fogg oil in the and turn the flywheel.

Re: Flywheel not turning

So let me get this correctly, with all plugs removed and shift gear in neutral the flywheel will not turn even with a wrench on the shaft's nut? Or even with the starter motor? Obviously the next step is to open and inspect starting with the head and then the intakes.

no just with the wrench and hand but not with starter. yes with all the spark plugs out.

Re: Flywheel not turning

First drop the lower unit before you start taking the head apart.
I did that once.
Was convinced the motor was tore up.
Started removing stuff and got the head off and it was PERFECT!!!
The bearings on the drive shaft were shot and it needed 24V to think about turning over.
Just needed a new lower.
Some people throw parts at their motors when something simple was the problem.
It's possible te heads bad? , maybe not?

Re: Flywheel not turning

and your block is still cracked?

If that is the case, I am going to assume the power head is toast.

Re: Flywheel not turning

yes the prop moves both ways but will not move when put in gear.

Drop the LU first as Jerry mentioned and then try again. If flywheel is still stuck, it's time to open and inspect starting with the head removal.

Re: Flywheel not turning

If you drop the lower unit and the flywheel is still stuck, all is not lost. Chances are very good that upon sitting for an extended period, rust has developed inside one or more cylinders. You would be surprised to see just how little rust on the cylinder walls it takes to seize an engine.

So remove the cylinder head and see which cylinders have rust. Spray them liberally with penetrating oil and let sit a while. Then with a block of wood and a good sized hammer, beat on the top of the piston to get it to move. Once you have freed it up, get inside the cylinder with some fine sandpaper and remove the rust. If it is not too bad, a simple cleaning will suffice. If you needed to do heavy sanding, unfortunately, disassembly and thorough cleaning will be necessary.

If you can not free the engine, then it is likely that you will need to disassemble to loosen it. If this is the case, a rebuild is necessary--or in your case, a replacement block since you already have proved that the crack is letting water into a cylinder.

Fill out the profile? Location?
You might be close to someone who can help.
You say rust and water?
Possible the blocks cracked and shot.
What condition was the head gasket?
If it allowed water into the piston then you can rebuild.
If it's coming from somewhere else???? You might have a piece of aluminum s-crap?
Pictures of the head and gasket?
Greg in Va.had water intrusion and never did find out where it came from.

Saw it's the cracked block (thanks Scott) thread.
Buy it and save the old for parts.
