flywheel removal?

ok---got back to tearing down my '79 evinrude 85 and was curious if there is any easy way of pulling the flywheel that doesn't involve me having to buy a flywheel puller. i know i probably sound like a cheapskate shadetree mechanic, but i would rather do it the cheap way if i could. suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

rent a harmonic balancer pulley.

you need a flywheel puller and flywheel holding tool<br />and torque wrench for instalation.

A piece of flat bar stock with two holes drilled to match two of the three puller holes will work as a holding tools for nut removal/installation.

A harmonic balancer puller is only $10 to $15 to buy and works well. Rent, ah come on, there's cheap and there's stupid. The more expensive tool is the flywheel holder (available from NAPA as a flywheel turning tool for cars) is ~ $30 and you need it and a torque wrench to re-install the flywheel, and it's doubtfull you can find a rental tool.

just got back from autozone and bought an inexpensive harmonic balance steering wheel puller that fits up great. but when i go to cranking down on the center shaft on the puller, it is VERY hard to turn and i feel like i'm going to break something if i keep trying to turn it. is this normal? should i just keep going? let me say again that i am a newbie to outboard repair. i have a manual and have been following it step by step. this is what i have off so far----heads, starter, air silencer, carbs and intake manifold. is there something else i should have done first?

It took me 5 days to get mine to pop off. This is how I did it. I actually bought a cheap puller and set it up properly. The wheel would not budge with the puller cranked down. So I applied a "break loose" spray bought from local auto parts store twice daily and attempted to tighten down each time with no luck. I would do this daily and also would tap the wheel quite a bit to help get the spray down on the shaft. The very last thing I did was to apply gentle pressure from underneath the wheel using leverage but carefully to avoid damage to motor. Without warning the wheel popped off and popped off very loudly. <br /><br />Good luck...and be patient with it.

thanks dc. i'm new to this and have a tight budget and the last thing i want to hear is the sudden crack of some part breaking from somewhere under the flywheel because i didnt loosen that bolt or remove that nut first. thanks again, i'll try your method and see what happens.

Be sure and use grade 8 bolts. Most harmonic balancers don't come with them. ACE hardware has them. Not using grade 8 may result in breaking bolts.

boatbout do you mean breaking the heads off the bolts? i thought about that and put a nice big thick washer on each bolt before i installed the puller. the slots in the puller only seemed to catch the edges of those bolt heads and i figured i'd bend 'em over otherwise

Belive it or not, they'll actually will break off just at the threaded part.<br /><br />For a long time I got away with some really crummy "grade nothing" screws, using the tighten/tap/tighten/tap method. Thats where you torque up the puller, lift up on the whole flywheel/puller unit, and give the puller's center bolt a whack with a hammer. Then repeat. If that doesn't work, then out comes the torch.

Be careful what you hammer on and how hard you hammer. You may pop the flywheel magnets loose. Tap the puller bolt, not the flywheel.
