Hello,

I currently purchased a pre-owned runabout that has a MerCruiser 305 V8 200 horse engine in it. The starter has gone and I have been looking around for a replacement but have run into a problem. Apparently for my engine, there were two size flywheels made for my year, a 12 3/4 inch and a 14 inch. Is there any way of telling what size flywheel I have? I have been looking around everywhere and cant find anything. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks

Re: Flywheel Size

You mean the starter stopped working, or the starter is missing? If it's still there, if the mounting bolts are inline with each other then it's the smaller flywheel, if they mount in a staggered pattern it's the larger one.

The starter is still attached to the engine but does has since bit the dust. I'll check to see if the bolt line up or are staggered. Thanks!

Re: Flywheel Size

Look at the valve covers. If they have 4 bolts along the outside of the cover, it has a 12" FW, if you have 4 bolts through the center of the valve cover you have a 14" FW.

Please tell us you will be putting a MARINE starter motor on..... It sounds like you may be talking to an auto shop....

Re: Flywheel Size

I am putting a marine starter on. Dont worry, no auto parts stuff here.

Well I called Mercury and gave them the serial number to my engine. They gave me the part number I needed to order a new starter for my engine and I did. I just took off the old one and what do you, its the wrong one. Not very happy right now.

Thanks for all the help guys.
