Re: Foam or Not !

Thanks for everyones insights. The yeses seem to have it. The boat has some 70, pieces of teak, and ribbon mahogany trim. The stringers will be
marine plywood totally encapsulated in epoxi. The center flooring sections
also are marine epoxied plywood. The console is also completely covered
on the inside with same. The large fish box will be covered with styrofoam,
epoxi coated - six sides, as is the baitwell. The boat has 4, main stringers
with quite a bit of room between them, running the length of the craft.
The fuel tank is 125 gal. that will only be filled to maybe half the capacity
because of ethanol fears. The gunrail has some space for foam as well. I
don't know if it will float in a catastrophe, but I guess I'll fill every void I
can, and hope I never find out. I greatly appreciate everyones input. I'll
be sure to post pictures when the economy, and weather warms up.;)

You're welcome, we got a little off the subject (that's normal) but it has been a fun and informative thread.

Anything will help a boat sink..including tanks of fuel...

Not true. Throw a tank of fuel in the water and it will FLOAT. Not as bouyant as foam, but it will NOT sink a boat.

I vote no foam. I dont believe there was any foam placed by the manufacturer when the boat was made. You should replace rotton stringers with either wood or a composite stringer. Yes you can make one with a foam core. If you are considering any sound quality or structural filler, it should be added after stringer replacment and before deck replacment.

From me " Anything will help a boat sink..including tanks of fuel... "

I never said Fuel will sink a boat.. I said Fuel WILL help sink a boat..

You have full tanks VS. Empties...the fuel will Help Drink your Floatation calculations..Fuel Will help Sink your boat..If you calculate your foam with a totally Wet boat VS. Dry ( Fuel, Holding tanks, Water tanks.. ) you will have Any liquid Help sink your boat.

The thing is Casull .. you say fuel will Float/surface to water ( And I know it does )..The impression that Fuel will help your boat Float is what I was saying..It does Limited Value ( hamper infact ) of flotation.

Id rather have an empty tank than a full tank of fuel when swamped..

YD.

PS. mebbe I got the whole fuel thing wrong on this post.
PSS. There are some laws that say you cant have an open space larger than X without being filled with foam or emediate access ( not for safty .. but for storage/smuggling etc..).

You did not read what I submitted. All the stringers are being done with marine plywood, doubled clothed 6oz - 24oz with copius amounts of Mas no blush epoxi. There are large spaces
between the stringers that I'm going to fill with dock floating foam coated with epoxi. The boat was built in 1983 - they did some things better then, but non encapsulated wooden stringers,
and decks was the worst. I have intimate knowledge of how they did my boat - I'm concerned about how to best re do it - augmentation. They should of put gunrails on it - that was alot of work! How much
does a gallon of roaches weight?

Are They Alive or Dead Roaches ?
How Many Did You Put in the Jug ?
If You Used A Blender
There Would Be 7.5 gal of Them per Cubic Foot

Re: Foam or Not !

Just get a self inflating life raft and have done with it.

If original foam was structural , is removed and compensated with a thicker deck sole, that does nothing for the open panels of glass.
