Fog that engine!

Hey, I learned something today!

I was working on my engine today (still waiting for the fuel tank) and was doing routine things (filters, carb rebuild, ignition). The last time I had the engine running was in Jan (4 months ago) and it ran fine. Well, today I went to turn the engine over to adjust the points, and it would not budge. Mind you, I didn't think twice about it sitting while I worked on the hull, and I would not expect it to set up. It sat outside covered and there was no way water was going to get in that engine. We do have cool nights where condensation forms though.

A few shots of PB blaster in the cylinders freed it up right away, and it seems to turn over just fine now. I pulled the valve cover and they seem to all be moving like they should.

Another area was the carb. I took it apart to rebuilt it and found all kinds of hard deposits, and not a trace of fuel. It is cleaning up fine, but damn. If I tried to just fire this engine up after sitting, I would have been a little irritated.

Of course I will now be changing the oil and outdrive oil before I get it fired up.

This should just serve as a reminder to fog your engine if it will sit for some time while working on it, and add some stabilizer, even if it will sit for a few months. It is easy to forget the engine when knee deep in fiberglass.

Re: Fog that engine!

Very good points! I was very pleased two weeks ago when I launched my boat for the first time this season, installed the battery and fired it up after five months just like it had been run yesterday. The sparrows trying to nest in the rafters didn't like me much, though, as the fogging oil really smoked them out!
Five minutes and $10 to fog the motor in the Fall saves hours and hundred$ in the Spring!

Well, it seems I am not out of the woods yet. I put the outdrive back on so I could fire it up and the dang thing would not turn again! Pulled the drive and now it turns over just fine. Before I took the drive off (installed new gimble and bellows but left outdrive in the garage) it worked fine. Now it is locked up tight! It goes in and out of fwd and reverse and the prop spins in netural, but the driveshaft will not budge. Well, something else to explore.
