Even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then. Eventually that poor blind squirrel is going to die though, like the poor powerheads that die in certain climates due to lack of proper fogging. ;)

I have a 1980 85 HP and with the fogging oil in one hand, the Evinrude Service Manual in the other and Iboats forum in my "favorites" it has not seen any thing other than Carb O/H, water pumps, timing sync. and gear box oil. Thanx to all the preceeding it runs great.

Yeah we all know that guy dont we!

I had a guy at my marina that used to tell me I was "brainwashed" by the oil company's for following the reccomended fuel/oil mix on my 50s OMCs. He swore by 100:1 mix, or even a 50:1 mix! I warned him all summer. At the end of the year the motor exploded, literally.

when it comes to an oil mix on such grandpas we have to consider that the cheapest today,s oils are better than high end oils in the time the engine was build and the mix ratio determined. and i guess the oil mix was never updated to nowadays oils.

i,m not saying gas/oil mix is unimportant, but on the other hand you cannot blame any blown 30-40 year grandpa to non fogging or wrong oil mixture by the owner, sometimes the engine was simply at the very end of his life .

Running them periodically does help. It gets fresh oil coating the parts and the warmth generated can get rid of any residual dampness...

While most would agree that oil has come a long way since the oils of yesteryear, keep in mind the engines have too.

A large percentage of the OMC produced engines from the 50's don't have the full complement of rollerized bearings that motors produced in later years had. As such, those older engines require more oil in the mix to keep the engine properly lubricated.
