I have two motors to think about gettting ready for what we jokingly call winter out here in Arizona :)

I have one V8 Merc inboard and one Merv 6 Cyl 2 cycle outboard.

The outboard will be in my garage all winter and the V8 will be outside but the weather here never gets to the freezing mark.

Total winter downtime will be approximately 4 months.

Do I need to fog both engines or just run the gas out and put stabalizer in the gas?

Suggestions please.......

(Both engines fresh water only and both get used only occasionally)

Re: Fogging

I would fog or run double oil through the outboard at the very least. The inboard....think of it as a car motor....run some fuel sabilizer and drain the water.

Re: Fogging

That comment got my attention dtherrien and I appreciate your advice. My outboard Merc is a Mark78 and the oil to gas ratio is 24 to 1 not 50 to one. So think I can just run the gas out and be done with it?

Well...thats a good question....i couldnt really say.I would think that you would be ok....maybe just add alittle more oil just to be safe...it wont hurt.
I have an efi outboard and thats what i do....double oil with a can of seafoam.

Re: Fogging

Stabilze both,and run.fog both,while running.Leave stabilized gas in carbs.Good,cheap insurance,no problems next year.

DHP

Re: Fogging

On the I/O or inboard engine Change the oil & filter, as old oil will become slightly acidic. Then run for a few minites to circulate fresh oil for coating bearings, rings, cam & lifters, etc. You can spray some fogging oil down carb. I usually coat engine w/ WD-40 or some such product. You can run anti-freeze through water intake, you don't say if it's fresh or raw water cooled. If raw water cooled anti-freeze will lube the water pump bearing, which it dosen't get from running, if it's fresh water cooled, change the anti-freeze especially if more than 2 years old, then change lower gear oil. For the 2 cycle fog the engine, change the lower gear oil, spray engine w/ WD-40 & store w/ engine down. On both run fuel stabilizer through engine at specs on the can, add to fuel tank as recomended, then remove props & grease splines. Good Luck, Joe

P.S. I know you say it don't freeze where you are, but doing it right is the cheapest insurance you can get. IMHO, Joe
