Follow up to 1994 Evinrude 175 excess oil use

I was given a lot of good suggestions and have ordered a factory service manual (luckily found one cheap on Ebay). In the last post I was asked to run the motor, shut it off and check for fuel leaking around the VRO diaphram.....I know where the VRO is but cannot readily identfy the diaphram. All hoses look good, not dry, brittle or loose. The really odd thing about this problem is that the motor did not use excess oil until after it was in the shop for routine maintenance. The fuel filter was changed so I would assume the air breather and vac lines were disconnected as needed for access. Any way a vacuum line could cause my problem. The motor starts and runs perfect. I ran it HARD last time out and it had no problems. I dont usually run it alot or hard as I am a catfisherman and have very close access to my "prime" dam. I am also hearing alot about decarb, and carb rebuild. How do I know if I need this? <br /><br />Thanks again

I would definitly check out all those vacuum lines. Might make the difference! Any change in air or fuel amount can change how the engine reacts to the fuel/oil mixture.

Well a carb rebuild is over my head for sure. How long does this take and what else should I have done. If the motor is running great, what would I gain by having it done? I will most likely do the spray decarb before my trip this weekend. Also will get some additive. I have had the boat 4 years and have ran it 20 times tops in 4 years. I run it usually sept through dec during fall catfish season. I dont winterize since I basically run it year round. In the spring I run it on the muffs. I usually go out 2 or 3 times in the summer. I just noticed in the manual it says for high performance use 50:1 mix with gas along with the VRO oil use which by my math is about 25:1. This is about the consumption rate I have now....will this hurt anything other than having to purchase more oil than usual. I checked the fuel filter and the reddish gasket was kind of kinked on one edge, nothing major. The black o ring was present. It was only finger tight, should it be tighter and if so what do you recommend. The 4 wire VRO connection looks good, however where the wires come out of the green circuit board housing appear to have a clearish oozy liquid on them (not much) looks oily but not 2 cycle color. Also the hose which connects behind the oil hose connection appears to have 2 cycle oil "leakage" around it. Nothing appears to be leaking from the VRO itself other than the oily looking substance on the 4 wires where they exit the housing.
