engine run strong. I can do 35 mph. I have a bayliner capri 19'. I saw water coming out of the engine block. facing the engine water comes from the right side around spark plug number two. it a small hair line crack. about approx one inch in length. how can I fix this problem and what should I do next? I checked spark plugs and they are dry and no water on them.

Re: force 120 crack engine block

you have a leak between part #19 the head and part #20 the water cover. If the bolts look old or the motor has been used in salt water then try to use something like high temp gasket sealer pushed into the crack. The worst that can happen is it will not hold then you will have no option other than to remove the water cover and reseal it. Good news is its not a major problem.

yes boat used mostly in salt water but when I get home I flush it with tap water. I connect tap water to the rabbit ears and run it. do you have a name of a good high temp sealer. the hair line crack on the block . it is not between where part 19 and 20 joined.

You'll have to dismantle and get that welded.
The crack looks like it travels to the face of the head??
You might find a welding shop to try to weld it.
A guy on here had a leaking powerhead. Some internal crack. He ended up buying a rebuilt unit.
It probably wasn't overtightend.Only 20# of tourqe there.
Possible???? It was retaining water and froze? Or the corrosion was built up and cracked it??(probably not)

Although I agree it needs to be welded. Salt water eats up everything. I have a boat that I run in saltwater. I wash it down every time I use it. However any metal is weakened in time. Even though I never used JB weld on a boat. I did use jb weld to fix a cracked crankcase on a motorcycle. It stopped the leak and I drove it for years. Just make sure you give it plenty of time to dry.

JB Weld on a powerhead won't work.
As it heats up it expands.
Then as it cools down it contracts.
Like a pimple growing,it's gonna POP out at the wong time :)

Do a compression check. If compression is good on that cylinder, the crack is strictly external. If it is only an external crack, live with the leaking water or try some Permatex on the outside, run the damn thing until it fails (it may not), then buy a used block.

Welding there simply won't be easy, will not be cost effective, and it may crack again.

+++++++1 its a hairline crack if it can not be leaking that much water so as long as its not into the cylinder I would leave it alone and just put some flexible sealer over it.

compression test? what are the compression range numbers for all cylinder so i can match them up with what i will get . can i use a car compression tester to test a boat engine.

off the top of my head anything north of 130 PSI and with in 10% of each other.

If you decide to replace the block i have one here that needs a bore (probably .20 over) that was fresh water only and stripped right down to just the block for light shipping.

yep just pull the kill lanyard and remove plugs then get someone to crank while you hold the throttle butterfly's open. A cheap compression tester will be all over the place so don't worry about the number just make sure they are with in 10% of each other.

Re: force 120 crack engine block

ok thanks . remove all plugs at once or remove one plug at a time. remove a plug check compression, put back plug and remove another plug check compression and put it back on. push throttle handle all the way forward correct. all the way forward is wide open throttle.

where can i get a good RPM gauge form my boat or force engine. bayliner doesn't have a RPM gauge.

i will post those numbers as soon as i do the compression test

Re: force 120 crack engine block

My "external" crack seeped water for 5 years.
Then it became an "internal" crack (somehow) and started leaking into the cylinder.
Correct, JB Weld will not work (tried that).
Run it till it does something else. Don't worry about water seeping out the crack.
Start looking for another block, it's not that expensive to have one built. Heck of a lot cheaper than something newer.

Re: force 120 crack engine block

how often do you take your boat out to the water per years. mine is about five times per years.

how many hours those a full bayliner capri gas tank last for. force 120 engine.
