I have a 1990 120hp Force that needs retimed. It has 3 lines and 1 more to the right about 2 to 3 inches. I saw the post that had many timing lines but mine is different. I am new to boat repair and really can't afford the $85 hr they charge here. Also I keep hearing WOT, can you tell me what that means. Thanks

Re: Force 120 timing

Welcome to iBoats. I'm not the most qualified person on here to offer timing advice, but WOT means Wide Open Throttle. As far as paying someone to work on the motor, it is much more rewarding to do it yourself. Just stick with this form, there is so much knowlegde in here you'll be able to fix anything.

The 3 lines together are (from left to right) 32?, 30?, and 28? BTDC (Before Top Dead Center). The one line by itself is 0?, or TDC (Top Dead Center).

The older flywheels have 3 and a single hash mark. You have a newer Mercury flywheel and ignition system.
You need to buy the FACTORY manual. The aftermarket books are not good enough to give all the info.
Spend the $$ and get the right book. Then you can do anything!!!

Pics please then it is easier to help you.If you have two blue CDI boxes and four ign.coils mounted on a plate it is Prestolite system. jerryjerry I think he may have the Prestolite ign.system. I have a 120Hp 1992 and it has the Prestolite system not the Mercury system.

I read it wrong, Sorry. I thought it was a 99 My BAD!!!!
Profile??? Location?? You might be close to someone who can help??
Now You still need the right manual for that motor. It covers static timing and dynamic timing.
You need some way to ground out the plugs(see pics).A timing light and a remote starter.
Get that all hooked up.
Key on.
Plugs out.
Throttle all the way forward.
Turn it over and see where the hash marks light up??
The marks are L-R 32-30-28
It should be around the 30.
That will get you in the right area.
Then the fun part, go for a ride and hit WOT and check timing?
It should be about 5500rpm. Then see where it lights up the hash marks.
I think at wot it should be 32??
I never do the last step!!!! It's too dangerous. If you get the timing set doing the static it's close enough.
Sorry again!!! Hope this makes up for that??

I want to thank you all for the help you are giving. I didn't think it would be this complicated. I have enclosed the pics you requested and I live in Osteen Fl. Just a fly speck on the map but it is next to Deltona. DSCF0002.jpgDSCF0003.jpg

Re: Force 120 timing

All my trouble came from turning the screw circled in this pic. I thought it had something to do with the idle. Them someone said it was part of the timing. I put it back to where I thought it was but I don't want to take a chance. 2.jpg

Re: Force 120 timing

That is the adjustscrew for the timing. Look at jerryjerrys last post how to check the timingadvance. The idlescrew is located on the timingtower and it stops the tower to retard. The screw hit the engineblock.
Full retard ign.advanc (idlescrew out) the single hash should point at about 2-3drg BTDC when you check with a strobelamp at #1 cyl.
You have the Prestolite ign.system.
