how can exaust enter the cowling from the inside? when I take the cowling off and look down toward the gear case, there is a flexable hose. Can the exhaust be leaking there? Are the holes that it is connected to exhaust holes or water holes?

Yes, the flexible hose can be the source of an exhaust leak. If it's bad enough, it will affect the way the engine runs. Both exhaust and water flow through the flexible hose and out the two small holes on the back of the motor.

Thanks, I just got the boat from a family member. The boat has always had an issue with taking off from idle. its been to the local shops numerous times and they never find anything wrong. I think this might be my issue, as the motor idles I think the cowling is filling with exaust. Boat runs great after the RPMS pick up

You can test by just temporarily removing the cowling. Be very careful around that spinning flywheel! Human flesh doesn't fare well when it comes into contact with the flywheel.

Is there any other ways exaust can be building up in there from the inside? Another thing, the whole time they had to pull a skier they would take the cowling off and run the boat that way thinking that the problem was lack of air. It always ran great that way.

Well I took the boot off and it doesn't look in to bad of shape. On the positive side that doesn't mean that it wasn't leaking so I am still going to replace it. When I put the new one on is there a way to make sure it seals tight to both surfaces?

If you're going to replace the flexable hose you should buy a new spring also. There is a spring that slides inside the hose that presses the hose against the exhaust exit with the 2 holes.
