Does anyone have a list of procedures for breaking in a rebuilt 1985 Force (1258x5a). I was told at a marine repair shop . . . 35:1 fuel ratio for the first 20 gallons or so. I was to ease in at various rates of speed and not to open it up at all until after 15 gallons of fuel have been used and then only for a second or so. Basically up and down 1/4 throttle to 1/2, then 3/4 to 1/3 etc . . . Does this sound correct? Motor sounds really good and idles smooth, starts quickly. I want to do what is best for the life of the engine. Installed telltale (and new impeller) and I am getting good flow. I can hold hand on warm engine, not hot at all so I know I have good coolant circulation. Thanks in advance!

That's pretty much the recommended procedure.

Does your motor have a thermostat and is it installed? Engine water temp should be 130F-140F or so which is nice and warm to the touch.

After the first hour.Reset the air screws. Then as you break it in do a comp test every so often. That's the first step to diagnose any future problems.
Sometimes new rebuilds will loose the same piston. For no reason at all. This helps keep an eye on the cylinders.J

Kind of spooked me about losing a cylinder. No spark in cylinder or throwing a rod? What would cause that, and why would it be more probable on a new rebuild? Too expensive to fix the first time around, a second would be the end of my boating experience. What should I look out for so this doesn't happen? First time boater. Thanks in advance!
