1258x5a (1985 125hp) Had what I thought was ignition switch problem. 30% of the time the ignition switch would not send power to starter. Changed switch (13 bucks). Still have same issue, maybe only 15 % of the time. I put a new solenoid on it before the switch. Starter always works when I jump the solenoid with a wire. Seems to never have problems with a cold engine. Battery is good. Guages and push to choke are not affected. Engine starts right away, very little cranking if any. The solenoid is not original force/merc product but simply one I picked up at Farm & Fleet, an ag/automotive type of box store. I am thinking maybe the solenoid gets warm from the engine and won't operate when warm? Any suggestions? This is a pain when I have to restart the boat on the pitching water and slip the cowl back over risking a meeting with the flywheel.

As I have said innumerable times: Jiggle the control handle from forward to reverse to neutral to re-center the neutral interlock switch cam. Look at the side opposite the starter under the bottom carb and you will see a brown switch with two yellow wires attached. Due to compliance in the control cable, sometimes when the control handle is straight up, the linkage is not dead center neutral and the cam will not depress the white button. If it gets too annoying, you can attach both yellow wires together BUT: This will defeat the starting in gear safety lock-out and is dangerous.

Thanks Frank! The metal part that is supposed to push the buton in simply needs to be adjusted. I probably didn't even need to change my old ignition switch to beging with. Live and learn, I am learning a lot, you are a great help!
