HI ALL,

OK. I AM A COMPLETE 'NEWBIE' AT THIS WHOLE THING. YA SURE, I HAVE RENTED A SPEED BOAT A COUPLE OF TIMES OUT AT THE LAKE AND KNOW HOW TO GO FORWARD AND REVERSE. BUT MAINTANANCE AND KNOW ALL THESE TECHNICAL WORDS....FORGET IT.

ANYWHO..I JUST BOUGHT THIS BOAT RIGHT? AN '89 20 FOOT MAXUM WITH A 125 FORCE MOTOR. BOUGHT IT ON LAND, WITHOUT TAKING IT ON THE WATER. OWNER TOLD ME THAT THE BATTERY NEEDS CHARGING BECAUSE HE ONLY HAD IT OUT ONCE THIS YEAR(I LIVE IN WI). THE TANK WAS FULL OF GAS SINCE LAST YEAR TOO. SO HE ADVISED THAT I GET SOME 'EAR MUFFS' AND GET HER STARTED AND RUN IT A LITTLE BEFORE I PUT IT IN THE WATER BECAUSE THESE FORCE MOTORS TAKE A WHILE TO GET STARTED AND WARMED UP AND I MAY RUN THE BATTERY BACK DOWN IN THE WATER. SO I DID, TOOK SOME CRANKING TO FINALLY GET HER STARTED. LET IT RUN A FEW MINUTES AND OFF I WENT TO THE LAKE.

DON'T FORGET, MY FIRST BOAT, MEANING MY FIRST TIME PUTTING ONE IN THE WATER. IT WASN'T PRETTY. LETS LEAVE IT AT THAT. FINALLY IN, PUT THE MOTOR DOWN AND STARTED CRANKING IT WITH THE CHOKE. NOTHING. JUST KEPT CRANKING. CHOKE, NO CHOKE, TOOK A GOOD 20 OR SO ATTEMPTS TO FINALLY GET HER TO RUN. SO SHE STARTS RUNNING AND SEEMS TO ME A LITTLE LOW IDLE SPEED BUT SURELY RUNNING. PUT HER IN REVERSE AND GET HER GOING DOWN THE NO WAKE ZONE OUT TO THE OPEN AREA. ALL THE WHILE SHE'S SMOKING SOME GOOD WHITE SMOKE OUT THE EXHAUST(I GUESS ITS THE EXHAUST). GIVE HER SOME MORE GAS, MORE WHITE SMOKE. SMELLS NASTY TOO. ANYWAYS....THOUGHT MAYBE ONCE I GET HER UP AND RUNNING FAST, MIGHT CLEAR UP. SHE RUNS GREAT AT HIGH SPEED. CAN'T REALLY SEE THOUGH IF IT STILL SMOKING THAT MUCH. TAKE A NICE 10 MINUTE HIGH SPEED RIDE AT AROUND 4-5000 RPM THAN HEAD BACK TO THE DOCK TO PICK UP A FRIEND. SO IM IDLING BACK IN AND SHE IS SURE ENOUGH STILL SMOKING UP A STORM. AS I GET CLOSER, I SLOW EVEN MORE THEN TO NEUTRAL AND THE ENGINE DIES. TAKES ME MANY CRANKS TO GET HER FIRED BACK UP BARELY. IT ALMOST SEEMS LIKE THE IDLE IS TOO LOW. I HAD TO KIND OF THROW IT IN GREAR QUICK AFTER IT WOULD START JUST TO GET IT RUN SO IT WOULD GET MORE GAS.

SO ANYWAYS.....THOSE ARE MY PROBLEMS.
-HARD START IN THE BEGINING
-SMOKING ENGINE
-WHAT SEEMS TO ME AS LOW IDLE, ENGINE DIES AT IDLE OR LOW SPEED AND TAKE ALOT OF CRANKING TO FIRE BACK UP

IT RUNS VERY STRONG AT HIGH SPEEDS. SOUNDS PRETTY GOOD WITH NO CLUNKING NOISES. WHAT SHOULD I DO? TUNE UP? MAYBE OLD GAS? HOW DO I DRAIN THE GAS, WHERE IS THE GAS TANK?
SO MANY QUESTIONS!!! I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHERE THE SPARK PLUGS ARE?

CAN ANYONE HELP ME OUT HERE?
ALSO, CAN YOU TELL ME SOME GENERAL INFO ON THIS MOTOR. LIKE WHAT TYPE IS IT (HOW MANY STROKES OR WHATEVER AND WHAT IS A STROKE) I HAVE READ ALOT OF THESE POSTS AND HAVE SEEN ALL THE PROBLEMS WITH THESE MOTORS. BUT MAYBE SHE JUST NEEDS SOME GOOD GAS AND MAYBE SOME NEW PLUGS OR SOMETHING.

THANKS.

LEE

PS....OH YA, AND WHATS A PROP (PROPELLER MAYBE?) AND WHAT SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT THAT.
OH AND ALSO, WHATS THE TRIM AND TILT FOR, DO YOU HAVE THE MOTOR UP MORE DURING CERTAIN SPEEDS OR WHAT?

Welcome to the board, lirimB. You need basic orientation. Go to your friendly neighborhood book, boat or auto store and get the appropriate Clymer Shop Manual for your engine. Read the first two chapters thoroughly, then read enough of the third chapter to prove to yourself that you can now speak and understand outboard. Then come back to the board with whatever questions you still have.

Smooth waters.
JB

Re: Force 125 on '89 Maxum 20'. Need some tips!

lirimB, greetings.

Question for you, was the gas you were using a year old? If so, That would be the first thing I would get rid of. Gas shouldn't sit that long, especially if its mixed with oil. I bet the previous owned didn't add stabilizer to the fuel to keep it from separating.

Clean the Plugs, Drain the Gas, and replace it with fresh 87 octane and new 2 stroke oil. (Should say TCW3 on the bottle, for 2 stroke, water jacketed engines. Dont use 2 stroke oil for lawn equipment, because it is formulated different, and definitely dont use regular automotive motor oil!!!)

If you are running old gas (I'm suprised you got it running!) and the oil has separated, you risk the possibility of improperly lubricating the engine. This will cause damage to the pistons and cylinders to the engine in no time!!

Like JB said earlier, it would be wise for you to pick up the Service manual. You may never feel the need to tear it all apart (Like most of us like to
biggrin.gif
hahaha) but it will give you a better understanding of the basic engine concepts. Hang out here long enough, and you'll be able to tell a stator from a starter and all that other "techno" stuff. :p

Good luck and let us know what happens.
Nav.

JUST TRYING TO HELP.HAVING MY OWN PROBLEMS WITH 120HP. FORCE 1994 YR. THE FIRST THING I WOULD LIKE IT WAS TOLD TO YOU GHANGE THE GAS WITH THE RIGHT OIL MIX FOR OUTBOARDS.SECOND THING BUY A SET OF EAR SO YOU CAN RUN THE ENGINE WITH THE GARDEN HOSE; MAKE SHURE THE WATER IS COMING OUT OF THE 2 HOLES JUST UNDER THE COVER. NOW BOFORE YOU START THE ENGINE SLIGHTLY REMOVE ALL THE SPARK PLUGS WIRES.INOTHERWORDS JUST HAVE THE PLUG WIRES JUST TO SEAT ON THE SPARK PLUG.WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING NOW TAKE A LONG SCREWDRIVER AND TRY TO GET JUST UNDER THE BOOT OF THE PLUG WIRE WITHOUT KNOCKING IT OFF THE SPARK @ GROUND THE SCREWDRIVER TO THE BLOCK. NOTICE THE RPM. CHANGE IF NO CHANGE YOU HAVE A DEAD CYLINDER.ONCE YOU HAVE THESE FINDINGS THEN WE HAVE SOME IDEA WHERE TO GO FROM THERE. AND A GOOD LESSON TO LEARN WHICH KNOW IS TO LATE NEVER BUY A BOAT THAT YOU DON'T TAKE FOR A RIDE FIRST.GET BACK TO ME OR SOMEONE ELSE CAN HELP @ DONT TOUCH THE SPARK PLUGS WIRES AT ALL WITH YOUR HANDS YOU WILL GET THE SHOCK OF YOUR LIFE WHILE RUNNING THE ENGINE GOOD LUCK

I can't add much to what the other guys said, but just wanted to welcome you to the water and the board.
The only thing I would add is take a "Safe Boating" course. Learn the safest way to operate her.
It sounds like you have a nice boat there. A little (maybee a lot,who knows this early in the game) TLC, and you'll have a dream come true.

Hey Lirimb, never run the motor out of the water without running water through the water impeller. The odor you smell may be from the burnt rubber of the impeller. When the motor is rumming in the water always make sure that you see water shooting out of the two holes in the back of the engine, if not, DO NOT the engine. The engine dying and hard starting maybe from overheating. I have the same motor as you and I recommend using premium gas and good oil. That motor should be running around 5250-5500 rpms. The rated rpm will be labeled on the motor. As for the propeller, the pitch should be stamped on the propeller. The higher the number (e.g.21") the faster the boat will go at top speed, but not as quick take off, like pulling a skier. The lower the pitch the better the take off yet not as high overall speed. The prop should let the motor run in the designed rpm range. If it is not in the range it is the wrong prop. Good luck and safe boating.

Re: Force 125 on '89 Maxum 20'. Need some tips!

Thanks everybody for your help. I have changed the gas and plugs and seems to run much better. I am still having a problem when I put her in neutral and she dies after a few seconds and its tuff to get her restarted. I have to put it right into gear to increase the speed of the motor so she won't die. I think its a low idle speed. It idles at around 7-800 rpm. Is that too Low? Where to you adjust idle speed?

As for the impeller, how much water is suppose to come out of those 2 holes. I see alot of white smoke or maybe steam? coming out of there at lower speeds with some sprays of water but more of a fine mist then at higher speeds there is more water coming out mixed with the same smoke(steam). Does that sound right?

Also, it won't let me trim-up the motor at full throttle. Is this normal?
My top speed seems to be around 35 or so. Shouldn't it be more?

Thanks again to everyone for their insight.

LirimB, I have the same motor and it idles around 1000-1200 but that doesn't mean yours shouldn't Idle at 800, it is just for reference. The Idle is adjusted on the left side of the engine (from the boats view). There is a verticle black rod (long) that is called the tower shaft. It connects to the carburators by a short rod with two connecting adjustible nuts. Toward the bottom of the tower shaft is a screw that hits the block. Loosen the nut and turn the screw in a little and tighten the nut. Boat motors are very touchy so I would recommend purchasing a manual. JCWhitney carries all manuals for about $28 dollars. Phone 1-800-529-4486 or www.jcwhitney.com. As far as the impeller I would probably have that replaced, sounds a little weak to me and is not that expensive, plus you can do it yourself with a little knowledge. As for the speed of your boat, I have a 18' bayliner and I run between 42 mph to 34 mph, depending on the prop.. The trim should work at all times, without more info its tough to tell why not (weak voltage output at high end or lack of oil in pump or tilt and trim problems?). good boating

I BELIVE YOU SAID THIS WAS A FORCE ENGINE. WHEN I FIRST STARTED WITH MY ENGINE IT WAS TRYING TO KEEP HER RUNNING AT LOW SPEED OR AT IDLE . THE ONY WAY WAS TO THROW HER INTO GEAR ; WHILE IN GEAR AT HIGH SPEED NO PROBLEM ; SOON AS I LOWERED THE SPEED TO CRUISE THEN THE PROBLEM STARTED;IT STALLED;THEN I GOT INTO IT A LITTLE MORE AND FOUND OUT SHE WAS RUNNING ONLY ON 2 CYLINDERS MAKE A SHORT STORY.IT WAS IN THE STATOR. ONE SIDE OF THE STATOR WAS NOT FIREING.I DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS THE CORRECT WAY TO CHECK IT BUT I TOOK A OHMS READING ON BOTH SIDES OF THE STATOR ONE SIDE WAS DEAD. SO THIS IS SOMETHING TO LOOK INTO I RECIVED A LOT OF HELP FROM THIS SITE

Ahoy, Lee. Did you get the manual?? It tells you how and shows you where to adjust the idle speed.

Dcsjr. is correct: you need a new impeller. Change it now, or it may become academic.

Good luck.
JB
