Force 150 questions

I just bought an old piece of crap boat because I needed the trailer and motor off of it. It had a Force 150 on it that I was planning to put on my flats boat that I have been restoring. I just figured out that its a 25" shaft and I needed a 20". What all parts would I need if I happen to find someone parting out an old force? I know I would need the leg, and the 20" drive shaft. Anything else I should look out for? I believe its a 1990 motor if that helps any. Also, I have no controls for it and just ordered some. There is no wiring harness, Im guessing these do not have a harness, but a wire board? I dont know much about outboards so if anyone could help Id appreciate it. I can also move the motor up and down by hand. Could this mean my tilt and trim is shot? Thanks for any help. -Justin

The kingpin is 5 inches longer so you would need another or cut yours. Of course, the shift rod is longer too, but your midleg should come with it. There is nothing else to get except the king pin front plate because there is a special bracket with eight bolts on the 25 inch leg reinforcing the extra 5 inches.

If you get a complete midleg with the pivot yoke, then you need not get anything else.

Be prepared for a difficult time removing the block from the midleg. The front six 3/8 bolts are easy but the rear six studs tend to corrode into the mounting flange of the midleg. You really should have a lift since it is over 100 pounds. At the very least, have a friend to help with the lifting.

By the way: Where are you located? I have a BUNCH of midlegs.

I am in Jacksonville, FL. I have been searching craigslist for a force motor being parted out, and I am having no luck. If you would be willing to ship, Id be willing to pay. Let me know. I am in no hurry as I am still trying to finish painting my boat. Thanks. -Justin

If it is a 1990, I am reasonably sure it has a 2 piece drive shaft. Before you junp for a midleg, be certain you can get a used 20 inch drive shaft OR a good used lower unit with a 1 piece drive shaft. NEW, the drive shaft for a 20 inch leg is high 200s, almost 300--kind of dear. Now, physically, any lower unit will bolt up BUT I don't know what gear ratio the 150 had--might have been different than the 125 and 85.

I re-read you post: If you can tilt the engine up by hand, then you indeed have a problem with the tilt/trim. However, If you can easily pull out the leg until it contacts the rear shroud, then the lower engine mount is broken. If you can physically lift the engine vertically, then both the lower and upper engine mounts are broken.

I'm not sure about the 150 but it probably is the same as the 125 and 85 for wiring. There should be a terminal board on the starter side of the engine and the electrical cable from the ignition switch attaches there, color to color.
