force 1988 85 hp no spark

having trouble and getting no spark with my 1988 force 85hp motor, where do i begin checking, pull the plug on #1, some guys tell me the stator is bad, others say it is the coil pack, others say it is the trigger, im lost and have no clue what to do, got all 3 different answers from the marinas around here, just dont trust taking it to them and having several not needed parts put on

could be any one of those. they all need to be tested with a meter. some of the folks should chime on soon. they explain better how to test stator and what readings and resistance you should get. i dont want to give numbers since ive had no experience with the 85hp. heres a troubleshooting guide fron cdi on the ignition box . http://www.marineengine.com/parts/technical_information/cdi_116-8301.pdf

Read through this post: At first this sounds like an ordinary inadvertent battery connection but eventually ended in a spark problem and solution.
