Force 1990 90 Bogging Down

My engine is a 1990 90 HP force. 300 hours on it. Always ran well. I have had a bit of work done recently, replaced stator and starter. The guy that fixed the stator told me he"fixed the throttle so that you can now give it throttle while in neutral. The manufacturer had a block on it." Anyway, I can run the boat shut it off and when I start it up again it bogs on throttle while in gear. I reduce throttle and hit it again and it seems to work. I have cleaned the jets, run seafoam through it, used high test gas...yikes the price. This had not been a problem before getting boat "fixed." I noticed a few postings on throttle linkage problems and simiilar bogging problems. Could the throttle on neutral fix be causing other problems? Any help is appreciated.

When in neutral the throttle butterflies on the carbs should be completely closed at the lowest throttle setting. If the mechanic adjusted these so they are slightly open you are probably flooding your engine when you shut it off. One symptom of what I am describing is on a cold engine start is your RPMs high? If so chances are the throttle is set too high and needs to be readjusted.

I will check that tomorrow. Thanks. I do notice that after I run it and bring it back to neutral, the RPMs are at about 2200 and then come down to about 1000 after 20 or 30 seconds. May be common I just can't remember anything pre problems.

1000 seems too high. Should be around 600 to 800

I must say I'm a bit suspicous about the mechanic "improving" your linkage and then you having problems. I'm sure you could advance the throttle is neutral for a cold start. Find out exactly what he changed and restore it to it's previous condition. My interpretation of his statement is, I broke somethinmg and didn't want to spend my time or money fixing it so I'm selling it to you as a no charge improvement.<br /><br />There are some very good, honest wrenches on this forum, unfortunately, not every mechanic out there is straight with their customers.

Looked at the butterflies and they are completely closed. I have to say the bogging did not happen again today on several stops and starts, but...there is always a but with boats...the RPM's jump up to 2000+ when I shift to neutral after a run. It takes about 30 seconds to come down. I will spray the linkages really well this afternoon. Any other suggestions?

Maybe check all you fuel lines for leaks. You may be sucking air somewhere

I have this same motor. There is a safety feature which prevents the throttle from being moved off of idle in neutral. It is just a small metal tab at the base of the throttle tower. He may have removed this, but doing so should not have affected anything else. However, those high RPM's are very suspicious. I suggest taking it back, and have the mechanic get it right.
