Force 50 hp Motor won't keep running

1988 Force 50hp. Got it cranked finally. Doesn't crank every time though. When it does it only stays cranked for a couple seconds.

Cleaned carb. Replaced float needle. Adjusted float. Cleaned fuel filter at fuel pump. Replaced fuel pump diaphragm. Adjusted air mix screw 1 1/4 turns out from lightly seated. Idle screw out 1 1/2 from lightly seated. Both plugs have good spark. Compression is supposed to be between 130-150. I tested it at between 110-120.

Could the low compression keep the fuel from pumping? Also there are a couple wires I noticed that were allowed to sit on the block and the insulation is burned in a couple of areas. The wires I noticed burned connect to something under the flywheel. Could an electrical issue cause it to not run?

Thanks

Burned wires are never a good thing. Cranked? Doesn't crank? Cranked for a few seconds? Please define crank. I've been called cranky.

Need to correct the problem with the burnt wires. You either need to get some insulating sleeves or heat shrink tubes to insulate the wires. These wires coming from under the flywheel (stator and trigger) are very critical for proper operations. As you correct this problem try again and let us know of the results. To make sure you insulate them properly, none of these wires should have a connectivity to ground. So by reading each wire to ground and getting an open ckt reading means you have insulated them properly.

In a mechanic's term, crank means to turn it over either by using a cranking tool or an electrical motor or starter. When you start an engine, basically what happens the starter engages and cranks over the engine. And because you are trying to start the engine, either the engine started (which means it should be running) or it didn't start (or it is still not running). Some will use the term it "fires" or "will not "fire" to refer to started or not started.
