Hello all, long time lurker and I appreciate all the time you have put into helping everyone.

I am looking for a detailed list of what is exactly needed for an impeller change on my new to me '88 force 50hp.

I see the impeller on the Mercury site for $20

http://www.mercurymarineonlineparts...HOUSING/06-002-FOB4252-1680/FORCEFOB425216035

Then I also see a water pump kit for $160 but I'd rather not spend the $160 for parts I don't need other than the impeller and a few gaskets. Everything runs great but it has sat for a few years so I'm just trying to do the upkeep before I take it out on the water.

I appreciate the help, thank you.

Unless the water pump is in extremely poor condition all you need is the impeller. Remove the water pump. if the inside is only slightly pitted it is in good condition. If it is badly corroded then yes, you need the kit. If in doubt post a photo of it.

BTW: Don't lose the small stainless drive pin for the impeller.

Thank you Frank. So it sounds as it is commonplace to just reuse the existing gaskets and or use some gasket maker unless I am missing something and the $20 impeller also includes the gaskets.

I don't believe that engine uses a set of gaskets. I know there is no gasket between the pump and the bottom steel plate. There May be a gasket UNDER the stainless plate but if you don't remove the plate it can be left alone and re-used. All the parts in the pump like the top seal and the water tube adapter can be re-used unless they are grossly damaged. But, you will see that when you remove the pump. So, drop the lower unit and examine the pump before you order.

The 20 buck impeller includes ONLY the impeller.
