I have a 1995 50 HP Force model 50ELPT, S/N OE110179. No spark either cylinder.
I have the Clymer shop manual 1984-1999. The wiring on my motor is a hybrid of 1995 and 1996. It has a 1995 Thunderbolt capacitor discharge ignition (CDI) switchbox with wires white, violet, red, red/wht, blue, blue/wht and green to cyl #1 and G/W to #2 ignition coils , a rectifier/regulator with yel, yel, gray(tach), red (pos+) leads, and a trigger showing violet and white leads. The stator is a 1996 capacitor discharge module part with 5 leads of g/w, w/g, yel, yel (to rectifier) , and ground. The g/w and w/g leads from the stator connect to an Adaptor (834949A 3) also g/w and w/g leads. The Adaptor blue lead is connected to the 1995 switchbox blue lead. The switchbox red lead goes to the POS +.

I want to find a schematic for this mess and a troubleshooting method. The adaptor in not covered in Clymer and I have no clue as to how it works. It must be a service change at the end of 95.

Adapter? Hmm. Never heard of such a gizmo..But if it was meant to werk on a Force, this link should help you out. If,for nothin else than the color code changes they made....This drove me whacky once too!!(See "Insanity Test" in the Nothing To Do With Boats section).
Like Boomhuer says, "Them Dangol Force motors with the dangol Cdthunderbolt dadblamed gizmo which aint in the the---I tell ya what,hank".....
http://www.performancemarine.net/bulletin/bulletins.html

Dunegood, that long black box was installed with replacement red stator kits...it 'modified' power coming from the stator for the purpose of switch box longevity...even the factory manuals have been vague on this....near as I can tell they are needed to hold down excessive voltage at WOT ...I always relied on the 'garbage in/garbage out' method of testing...check power going in, then power out.

dunegood ,you have checked your lanyard for your emergency ign. cut off switch havn't you . if you have check the voltage going into the adapter should be around 200 v dva.{was told that this could vary by50v dva either way } voltage coming out should be 190v dva min .and coil primary should be 130v dva min. hope this helps.if you still need the wiring diagram i do have it and can email it to you

Thanks you all for replying to my request fot information on my ignition problem on Force 50. I checked the "performance" site and downloaded the tech booklet. I still would like to receive a wire diagram from johnkc. My e-mail is fwviebrock@cchat.com Force bulletins are not yet up on the site.

Here's my story. This is my first boat. Nothing but headaches from this Force. Bolt shake outs in the first 30 hours and bad experience from fixit shop. Gaskets blow out and three failures while away from the dock. Boo on Force.

I and retired scientist. My military was ASW air crew, electronics tech. I work with "good" tech manuals. I am from the vacuum tube era and must start from zero on these electronic ignitions. I have rebuilt auto and aircraft engines with the old breaker point etc.
If my questions sound "duh" it is because I am "duh" about these mystery boxes. Once I am grounded I will pay back all your fine help to other "duh" novice boaters.

Dunegood, I feel for ya....if you pick up a factory manual for this engine it will help some...lots of times an 'assumed' amount of knowledge needed to move forward in the process of troubleshooting...and the typos in the manual will make you nuts..
on the positive side, i can say the manuals for force are MUCH better now that merc made them..back in the '80's you'd have though the people who wrote the manuals were on drugs, every day........as far as the ignition system goes, just remember, power in, power out....all the system does is power management, from the flywheel magnets to the spark plugs..you can test any copper wound coil [ign coils, stators, triggers] with some measure of certainty, the switch box you cannot...you must verify all else in the system and then fail the switchbox by default...
as far as the rest of your probs with the motor, yes, you are right, this is not a high quality piece of motor...at best i hope your troubles will be at an end...

fwviebrock - did you ever find the solution to this problem? I have the same motor, with very little spark.
