force 50hp slipping gear

hi all i am after some help, i brought a new 15.5 ft half cab with a 1994 50hp force outboard on it, it starts and runs fine but when i put it into forward or reverse it starts to move then seems to slip/skip and jerk the motor abit then starts moving til it does it again. i have been told it would be the gearbox but i have now dropped the gearbox off the motor and it seems to be fine..
can anyone give me any ideas??

Dropped the gearbox???You look inside the gearcase?
Inside is a part called a clutchdog. The edges of the mating surface should be square not rounded off.See pics.The dog in the pic is a good one. Don't have a pic of one that's rounded off.

dropped the gearbox off the outboard.. i havent pulled the gearcase open yet was a bit unsure of how complicated they are to do.. i have found a place that machines/refaces the gears and dog clutches already so now i just have to work out if i should send the gearcase to someone or pull it down myself.

Easy to take apart.

This thread should be good, I'm grabbing a seat up front. Video of the process would be awesome, maybe you could take some as you go, along with the photos for here. Then post the final video on youtube when complete showing the entire process.

sorry about the long absence between replies. i dropped the gearbox and found about 100 parts inside it so i have had to source a new one which i have finished installing and i have tested it today with some good success so far. i only need minor adjustment now. but i was cruising along at about half revs and the water pressure dropped to nothing so i cut the motor and steam come out so i am guessing it over heated not sure how bad. but now i seem to have good compression (borrowing a tester this week)and motor is turning over as normal, but does not want to fire up properly or keep firing. is there a cut off relay / switch or fuse that may have gone? i didnt hear any buzzer go off that i have heard people talk about.

94 should have a small black buzzer under the dash.
The motor should have a sender or thermo switch on the head.
You need to test the overheat system.
Key on(not running) and ground out the thermo switch on the block.
It should make the buzzer sound off.
If not take it and apply it direct to a battery.
If it doesn't work, you can replace it with any car horn or motorcycle horn.

will that stop it from starting if it is not working properly? just tried the buzzer on a battery and nothing. so i now dont know how long i may have over heated the motor for.

Yes it will ruin the cylinders.
Do a compression/spark test.
If the comp is low, remove the head and check for damage.

what compression should i have? is there a low point that i should just pull the head off at?

Had you checked or replaced the lower unit?s oil? In the described L/U condition, you probably had metal in the oil. On a motor new to you IMO certain areas should be checked by an experienced mechanic before a sale is complete. I think most of us new to boating, learn lots of info too late. Such as if I had known about Dog 30 years ago and the items below we would have had a better boating experience and savings.

1. Compression test on all cylinders
2. Check lower unit for oil w/o water or metal in the oil
3. Cooling water is flowing
4. A good :30 minute + run in the lake or etc..

found a guy who is a outboard mechanic and at a good price so i am just going to get him to fix it and get it going for me. thanks for all the help will let you know how i go guys. cheers again for all the help
