Force 70hp tilt & trim Help Needed

Hi all,

I recently purchased a 5 metre Yamarin 490 Big Ride boat that has a 1992 force 70hp outboard with tilt & trim. The engine is stuck in the up position and I cannot get the engine to go down as I beleive the down tilt & trim relay is faulty. The engine is to far up so I cannot take the hood cover off to gain access to the relay. I have searced for a manual release valve but there is not one. I managed to get hold of Clymer Force manual but apparently they did not put a manual release screw on this engine model?

Does anyone now how I can drop the engine down 5 or 6 inches so not to cause any damage to any parts but to gain acess to taking the engine cover off to replace the relay.

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards
Chris

Welcome to iboats.

Safety first.

Brace motor in the up position so it can not fall on you while you are working on it.

Remove the hydraulic lines from the bottom of the trim motor.

Be careful not to bend or break them.

Slowly lower the motor.

You will lose fluid, will have to refill, then cycle it a few times and fill again to get the air out.

Replace lost fluid with either 30w oil or trans fluid, look at the fluid that leaks out to determine which.

loosen the line that goes to bottom of cylinder first. you may find that by breaking the seal on this line the engine will drop without having to loosen the other line or completely remove any fittings. You should still brace for safety. Once you can get inside the engine cowl, hotwire the trim motor directly to a 12v battery. If it woirks when hotwire then it is relay/switch. If it does not work hotwired then it is the motor.

I would be real surprised if you did not have a manual release screw. More than likely it is accessible thru a hole on the bottom of the engine starboard mounting bracket. I have seen that hole full of crap, needing to be cleaned out to access screw. The screw will have slot for large standard blade screwdriver. Worst case, look up the tilt and trim schematics and find the manual release.

Just my two cents worth...

i think 1992 was the tall skinny Eaton pump with holes drilled directly into the bottom of a square manifold. I don't think that particular pump had a manual release.

Time for you to be real surprised. :)

There is no manual release on this unit.

Real Surprised? You betcha; no manual release, that's like having an outhouse with no holes. Roscoe, thanks for the correction, I have learned something new today...
