Hi,
This is my first time posting to a forum.

My question is about my force 85 engine running rough.

As background I have

O flushed fuel tank, new gas
O new fuel line from tank to water separator and new line to engine.
O have great compression

While to motor is a little hard to start, it does start every time but have to monkey with the key/choke. i press the primer bulb prior to trying to starting. Once started it sometimes idles fine, other times not so well.
When I start to go it will sort of stall so I push the key in for a second and the choke gives it a bit more gas and away I go.
When I'm wide open it runs like a top, top speed maybe around 48.
Sometimes it just bogs down when I'm trying to idle across the lake. I've pulled the screen where the fuel goes into the engine but what I've done hasn't seemed to help it run any better. Almost every time I go out fishing ( twice a week) I have to push in the key/choke to get it running.
Any ideas would be welcomed.

On a cold start, if you don't pull out the control handle OR Push in the center button and advance the control handle as far as it will go, all these engines will be cranky and difficult to start. Cold starting always will require choking too. That is just the nature of the beast. Then, 30 seconds or so of warm-up before leaving the dock is a help too.

The control box has an interlock--when you pull out the handle or press in the center button, it disables the shift and allows you to advance the throttle. It is automatically limited by the linkage so you don't need to worry about over-revving the engine.

NOW: On a warm start the engine should start readily in neutral without advancing the control handle or choking. If it does not, then sparkplugs are fouled and need to be cleaned or replaced or the idle RPM is set too low.

Thank you.. Ill try the warm up procedure you mentioned

Do as Frank suggests. Pull or put it in fast idle.
Then make sure the squeezie is pummped up, ball should be hard.
If not? Then replace the ball and check the fuel pump diaphram.
Then as you try to start, turn the key and push in to activate the choke.
Let it warm up a bit before you try to start. Some are cold natured and need to be warmed up.
The idle in neutral maybe about 1100, in gear and warm,750-800. Closer to 800.

Ok, thanks for the cold start cranking tips. My question now is;
I have a rough idle and it will hardly run at low speeds. I have to push in the key (choke) to keep it running. Any ideas welcome.

1st check the compression what are the #s??
Then the fuel pump check the diaphram.
Then the air screws on the carbs. They should be set at about 1 turn out.
Factory says leave them there at 1turn out. They can be fine tuning adusted after inital setting.
I turn mine out 1 turn and leave them there.
Finnaly check the gas for water??

Thanks. I'll check diaphram and check air screws on carb. Thank you.
Compression is good and just finished flushing the fuel tank so know its not watering gas.

Ok, I have good compression plugs look real good and fuel is new. The dang motor will not run at low speed without pushing in the key/choke a bunch, then she takes off and runs fine at about 45 mph.
I've adjusted the idle needles, bought new rubber diaphragm. Any help suggestions welcomed

Re: Force 85. 1985

I was out running the other day.
The last couple of trips it didn't idle well and kept stalling.
Mr. thinking it's nothing,I take care of my motors so NOTHING can be wrong??
Well BOTH motors, at the rubber boot through the mid section, BOTH clamps had rusted and it was dumping exhaust into the mid section housing.
I replaced with SS hose clamps and hopefully the problem is solved.

Your case(not gonna go back and read what's been done and not done, and what's suggested, months old!!)

How did you adjust the idle needles??? No such thing as idle needles??
They are air/fuel mix screws.
They need to be set at 1 turn out.
Then adjusted from there.
Check for exhaust leaks in the housing. A small leak will really put you out.
Do the linc and sinc tht FrankA posted in the first few posts.
The fuel recirc system could be clogged, take it apart and see?
