Force 85 Question

I am resurrecting a 1988 Capri cuddy with a Force 85. I cannot get the hand control to pull out to get neutral even by inserting a screwdriver behind the spring loaded washer at the back. Any suggestions as to what is sticking and the remedy?

Appreciate any help/suggestions.

Re: Force 85 Question

Pic of the shifter?
Try pulling when you move the throttle back and forth.
It might be off set. With neutral moved to a different spot.
Does it shift OK?

Re: Force 85 Question

Don't know which year has what but some have a button to push center of handle pivot, others have a trigger near the top. All are for fast idle "after" you already have neutral.

Re: Force 85 Question

Thanks for the input, folks. Here are a couple of pics. Note that there is no electrics connected to this control. Ignition and trim controls are on the dash. BTW, I did try giggling it without luck.

Re: Force 85 Question

Looks like the trigger under your thumb in the second picture. When in neutral, pulling it up should free the shifter to allow you into fast idle.

Re: Force 85 Question

That's odd as, looking at the mechanism, that trigger switch is only a neutral lock preventing gear engagement. I cannot see how it would allow the handle to be pulled out. In any event, even with the trigger pressed I cannot pull out the handle for a fast idle.

I guess it is a case of dismantling and lubrication.

Thank you for the input.

Re: Force 85 Question

The trigger is used instead of pulling the handle out. When the trigger is squeezed, in neutral, you should be able to increase engine speed and not engage the gears, thus allowing fast idle for cold starts.

Re: Force 85 Question

Actually, I have almost a similar one except the trim controls on mine are also on the shifter handle. And the way to do fast idle is to pull the handle out towards the driver (hand it by the center and not by the "T") and then push forward. The trigger on the handle ("T") is just for lock to prevent accidental shifting. You might want to spray it with WD-40 first before dismantling just to see if it will help.

Re: Force 85 Question

jerryjerry05 nailed it. I finally discovered that the shift handle's neutral position was grossly out of alignment with the mechanism's neutral position. By repeatedly removing the handle an changing its postion I finally hit the spot where the two positions were in alignment.

Thanks for all the input.

Re: Force 85 Question

Now that this problem is solved I have another problem related to this shifter. I tried starting this engine today, which has not been used for about 3 years, and expected that when I pulled out the shift lever so that it would not engage gears, I would be able to rev the engine in neutral. However, the shift lever is free in that position and is not connected to the throttle cable at all. Is this correct? Did I do something wrong by spraying WD40 into the mechanism?

Re: Force 85 Question

WD won't hurt anything(other than making a mess).
Supposed to be out of gear.
If it doesn't work when in fast idle?
Do the linc and sinc(top post) and it should help with fast idle.
Ah yea just send a check:)

Re: Force 85 Question

Ahh! Got the motor running this morning and discovered that the idle speed can indeed be increased by moving the shifter all the way forward in the neutral position.
