Fairly Newb here, I bought an 85 Hp # 856X5L last fall and have been working on it all winter. Motor runs good, however, I am not sure how the T/T is supposed to work. It appears to me there is no tilt cylinder(s) so it is a trim only system. I am not sure how the locking Brkt is supposed to work. Can anyone who has this system shed some light on it for me? All replys are appriceated.

Front of motor. On the steering bracket is a small handle that moves L-R or R-L
It should lock it in place.
http://www.**********/parts/search/Merc/Force/1988/H0854S88A/parts.html
Find boats .net look up Force 88/85 and transom bracket without T/T
It shows the whole lock mechanism.
Start at #1 #2 #3 #30 #31-#32 #33 #43 These are the main parts to the reverse lock.
See what's missing.Usually #30

Re: Force 85 Tilt only system?

That is a TILT only system. I have only seen one before. It functions this way: With the engine down and in running position the bent bracket locks on the 1/2 inch diameter stainless bar. This bar is set in the holes that give best performance. When you press up on the tilt button, the first pressure goes through the flexible hose and pushes a small cylinder that releases the clamp. Then the tilt cylinder raises the engine. The tilt cylinder does not have enough mechanical advantage to raise the engine at more than about 1000-1500 RPM. If you gun the engine with it partly raised, bleed valves within the cylinder piston will cause the engine to slam back down.

Your engine also shows a manual clamp release. The slotted head in the pump, that shows in one photo is also supposed to be a manual hydraulic release. You turn that, then release the clamp manually, and lift the engine by hand (for trailering etc,)

The clamp plate is spring loaded and will release if you hit something hard enough. Bleeder valves within the cylinder piston will allow the engine to rise when you strike a large enough object.

Re: Force 85 Tilt only system?

Thanks for the confirmation Frank, I assumed it was as I have a friend that had one of these on a mid Eightys bayliner. He did not remember the small cylinder under the lock brkt. My concern was when sitting in the driveway with the brkt locked, the motor would trim up past the lock. It makes sence with no motor pressure on it. As always, good advise from a pro, Us back yard guys really appriciate your input.
