Hey to all:

Subject engine was one meticulous owner prior to me, I've had it five seasons, it maybe has 500 hours on it. I'm sure it's never been apart, and am thinking that it's time to change the water pump(after reading all the threads about how these engines don't like heat).

My dad taught me goot, I always check for water on the telltails. But nothing lasts forever, and the cowling boot is starting to rot, so I'm thinking it's time to do the deal on the impeller.

Are there online instructions, or expanded part drawings? I'm sure I can make the swap, but I like to see what I'm getting into prior to ripping it apart.

No, I don't have a manual, and wasn't really planning on buying one unless ya'll can convince me it's the right thing to do. This setup is extremely simple compared to other boats I've had.

All the best, John.

The manual is of utmost importance. It gives you detailed instructions on how to do things that need to be done to the motor. It is getting harder and harder to find mechanics that will work on these machines. This forum is a fantastic source for information to help you with your motor but is best used when you dont understand what you are reading in the manual or you are troubleshooting. Someone here will tell you to test your ignition system. The book will tell you how to do that.

There are about 15 model force 85Hp for that year. You will need to post your model number to get the correct parts. Here is a link for one of them FORCE 85
The diagram shows you the breakdown but does not tell you what gear it needs to be in or how to take the lower unit off. The manual will tell you this. The book cost 30 bucks and it is well worth it.

I would recommend the manual also -- When you drop the lower unit you are disconnecting the shift linkage and the book (as well as this site) will be the best at helping make sure you get it back together properly- Could you do it without the book? Prolly, But the $30 is a bargain compared not having it go into gear when you get it all put back together-

I just replaced my impeller on my 85 force 85. the manual is a must...
Order the right parts and have everything ready to go. It only took me an hour to assemble the whole thing using the book. I am a newbie to boats but my first repair was A+. water flows freely out of both exits. Now if I can just find out why it's not firing on #1, I'll be good to go.

I have an 1986 85hp Force also. Be careful if you order from iBoats. The original part that the part finder said I needed (18-3017) was the wrong part. I had to go to the boat shop and buy from them. Make sure the part ordered is the correct one for your motor. Also, the Seloc manual wasn't that great (but still usable) for this procedure.
