I just bought an 88 bayliner capri with an 85 hp force outboard motor. I put it in the water today and at first it started up and ran great. ran wide open no problem across the lake and got to the dock at my brothers and shut it off. We got back in it and it didnt want to start, when it finally did it wanted to die when put in forward or reverse. After much coxing we got it to go and it ran wide open, half way across the lake and began to die out untill it died. It then was able to start back up and run again slow back to the dock.
We then looked at it with the cover off, when in the water it has water in the motor case/housing above the lower unit and I am not so sure it should be there. Can some one tell me if when I take the cover off of the motor should I see water? There is no water in the gear lube but I just think it should be a sealed motor if that where it gets its air, I am confused!!! I drove it back across the lake slow and it was fine, then beat it up a lil bit and seemmed to be fine, should there be water in there and has anyone heard of this before? Thank you much for any help.
