Pulled my lower unit off, and wierd thing happened. The unit came out fine, but the tube that the inlet waterline seal fits into was loose and telescoped out of the motor leg most of the way. (Basically, the nylon/plastic seal on the water pump fits into a tube in the motor leg. This metal tube pulled out with the lower unit when I dropped it.) It didn't come all the way out, and I was able to push it back in, but it is still loose. Shouldn't it be sealed with something at the top where it fits into the powerhead? I assume I will have to pull the powerhead to fix this, but I want to know what I am getting into before I do it and have the parts ordered. If there is a seal or bushing up there, what is it called so I can order the part?
It doesn't overheat, and seems to pump enough water, though that can be hard to tell. Do I need to worry about this at all? A response from The Marine Doctor would be greatly appreciated, and also from anybody else who knows what I'm up against!
Thanks in advance.

Stick a wooden dowel snugly in the end of the pipe. That will allow you to move it around and feel your way. I believe the fitting you'll need to find extends from the bottom of the adaptor plate that the powerhead is mounted to just forward of the exhaust cavity. Feel around for that (it should be round, about 1" in diameter) and push the pipe back in place once you've located it. It goes into a rubber grommet. When you put the gearcase back on, lubricate the end of the pipe that the water pump fits into with a dab of grease or petroleum jelly.

Re: force 85hp ob 1986 question

The water pipe has a sealed fittin beneath the adaptor plate that has a seal and is cinched onto the midsection with a couple of small bolts. It is possible that you'll get lucky and the pipe will re-seat and seal correctly using the procedure above. However, You would be serving yourself well to pick up a lasor temperature gun and monitor the powerhead temperature of all three cylinders while running it on a hose for a while. If it starts getting hot, you know the pipe is leaking. If that's the case, you will need to remove the powerhead, replace the seal and re-seat the pipe, then reinstall the powerhead.

I can tell it is not reseating, because I have pushed it all the way back in, but it is still loose. Just by grabbing the pipe with two fingers, I can easily pull it back out. It must be leaking. What seals/bushings/etc will I need, and what are they called so I can order them? Oh, and how much does a laser temp gun cost? Thanks for the help guys.
