Today I had my '96 force 9.9 out on the river for an Independence day cruise. I motored downstream just 5 minutes before it shut off. It seemed pretty warm, so I gave it a few minutes to cool off before I started it back up. It started right up but I noticed it wasnt pumping any water. At this point I shut it down and trolled back to the launch.
I took it home and put my spare impeller on, but the old one didnt look too awfully bad, however the impeller seal had come unseated and looked a bit worn, so I'm guessing that was my main problem. Anyhow I started it back up and it pumped water fine, but now it doesnt want to open up unless I am pumping on the bulb. When I am pumping it it will open up and run fine, but as soon as I stop pumping it will only stay running at an idle.
It doesnt seem like 5 minutes is enough to do any major damage, especially since I checked when I first started it and it was pumping just fine, so I am really hoping someone can help make sense of my problem! Also I am looking for suggestions for a good parts dealer to pick up the impeller seal and whatever else I end up needing.
Maybe the heat damaged my diaphragm? Seems like if it got that hot id be dealing with warped heads, bad rings and bad head gasket! I hope not and it doesnt seem like it would run like it does with all that damage? Any advise would be wonderful! Like I said it only ran hot for five minutes at most!
