Today I had my '96 force 9.9 out on the river for an Independence day cruise. I motored downstream just 5 minutes before it shut off. It seemed pretty warm, so I gave it a few minutes to cool off before I started it back up. It started right up but I noticed it wasnt pumping any water. At this point I shut it down and trolled back to the launch.

I took it home and put my spare impeller on, but the old one didnt look too awfully bad, however the impeller seal had come unseated and looked a bit worn, so I'm guessing that was my main problem. Anyhow I started it back up and it pumped water fine, but now it doesnt want to open up unless I am pumping on the bulb. When I am pumping it it will open up and run fine, but as soon as I stop pumping it will only stay running at an idle.

It doesnt seem like 5 minutes is enough to do any major damage, especially since I checked when I first started it and it was pumping just fine, so I am really hoping someone can help make sense of my problem! Also I am looking for suggestions for a good parts dealer to pick up the impeller seal and whatever else I end up needing.

Maybe the heat damaged my diaphragm? Seems like if it got that hot id be dealing with warped heads, bad rings and bad head gasket! I hope not and it doesnt seem like it would run like it does with all that damage? Any advise would be wonderful! Like I said it only ran hot for five minutes at most!

Has the fuel pump diaphragm been changed before, , if no, it's probably shot, Ethanol likes to eat that old rubber.

I would also check to make sure the fuel line quick disconnect isn't leaking or loose, if it sucks air it won't suck fuel.

You should be able to get the parts here on Iboats, but don't buy the Mallory fuel line fitting as I had one that only lasted a couple trips before leaking.

Thanks fishrdan, you advice helped me solve my problem. Heres the update:

First I disconnected the fuel line at the tank and drained it. I blew in it to see if it was air tight, it was. So I checked the fuel pump diaphragm and it looked fine. So I bled the fuel line and kept a couple of screws a little loose on the pump and squeezed the bulb a couple times to bleed that. It ran great.

I think the problem occured when I took my motor off to put my 3.3hp Merc Mariner trolling motor on (its a 12ft jon so the transom doesnt have room for both.) I sat the force sideways on the middle bench of my boat, fuel pump up. I likely filled it with air that wouldnt work its way through. I stilled purchased a spare pump kit just in case.

My main concern now is my water pump's seal, shouldnt it be pressed in tight to the housing? It wont seat very tightly and I cant find anyone offering a seal only without the whole pump. Right now I am pumping nice cool water with good pressure even at WOT but Id hate to get on the water and have another failure.

Anyhow thanks for the advice, I appreciate it!
