Morning folks. I have just got a US Marine single shift engine remote to replace my two lever remote on my '71 35hp Chrysler. I have no idea how to change gear with it though! Only one of the cables move so I'm assuming that's the throttle. If someone would let me know what's supposed to happen and how to select reverse and forwards I'd appreciate it so I can figure out if its me or the remote.

Welcome to iboats! First, a little background.: The US marine control box is designed so that the shift lever and cable (inside the box) will move first when you move the control handle. Then as you continue to move the handle, the throttle cable will begin to move.

So: Are you moving the control handle far enough to see this?

The cables are held in the box itself by a steel "clip" That sets into both the grooves in the cables and the plastic box itself. If this clip is missing or inserted incorrectly, either one or both cables may not function correctly.

I do not have any photos of a US Marine box so perhaps someone else will chime in with them.

When you DO finally install the control box, in order to start the engine you must disable the shift and put the engine in fast idle/warm-up. To do this, you (depending upon box design) either push in the center button and advance the control lever or pull out the whole lever about 1/4 inch and advance it. This allows a slight opening of the throttles but will limit revs to about 1500.

Ahhhh so that's what it's supposed to do. I did wonder. Lol. Funnily enough I may have just sold the engine so this may all be in vain. When the box arrived yesterday I only had time for a quick play so I will have a proper look in a couple of days as its stored at work. It is the push in centre button type.

I found my problem as to why it wouldn't seem to work and was confusing me. The throttle cable was siezed so that's why it wouldn't engage. Took the cables off and everything moves inside as it should. Thanks for the help :)

I wish I had known the motor was up for sale. I would have waited a day or two. LOL. I though you needed some possible help on a personal project. Your perspective buyer might stay with the old sys. Was it a two handle control as I use attached? Did it have a problem or is there an advantage/disadvantage in this matter.

Re: Force marine remote to '71 Chrysler.

I sold the engine a few months ago and a guy in Ireland bought it. It was in a 14ft fletcher project I bought for my nephew and myself. I spent about ?250 quid basically getting the motor fully serviced. It needed a new head and pipes needle valve diaphragm thing (as you can tell I'm really technical. Lol) I had a local marine engineer get it fully working. Anything that needed replacing got replaced. Nothing bodged together as id have young family in it. But got to the point I needed the cash. No one wanted it. Had it on eBay and a couple of boat sites for ?350. Only interest apart from normal tyre kickers was a bloke in Ireland. He paid deposit of ?160 and I never heard from him for the past few months. So back at the point I'm over money worries so I bought the force control for ?25 (bargain) as I prefer the look of single shift. But Irish man finaly emailed me today so looks like its going back to him. Unless I give him ?160 back.

I've tried uploading a pic of the shifter but I'm on my iPhone so it doesn't want to know. Lol. And can't remember my flicker log in to post a link
