Hey guys I was out fishing with my brother in a place where a good running motor is a must. I ran the boat wide open for a few miles upriver to the devils hole (below niagara falls). we did a few drifts and when I was about to go back upriver I noticed alittle bit of a grind then it was kinda jumping in and out of gear running rough so I put it in neutral and it would run good and I put it back into gear and back up river at the end of another same thing went back up and i was in gear and it kept "jumping" or skipping out of gear and I said we must go no and when it stayed ingear we ran wide open back to safer water. We kept the motor running and drove it around wondering what happend then it wouldnt go into gear it would just grind and rev up. But reverse wroked great...went into gear no problem. The shift cable and linkage apear to be working right....probly not but ill get someone else to help put it in and out of gear and take a closer look. Any suggestions? is it something else like a clutch dog or a blown out gear. I changed the gear lube friday and it was full changed the gear lub when I got home and there was some metal shavings not many maybe 5 small piecese when I drained it.

You said it.The dog or forward gear joined the other side.
Take it apart and check the dog and the mating surface on the gear.If they are rounded at all they need to be resurfaced or changed.
Post some pics.
Slow shifting will cause this, along with cables out of adjustment.J

Re: Force50 wont go into forward

thanks for the quick response jerry. I have a clymer repair manual to follow but do you have any tips to make this easier or heads up? I am going to change the impeller while the lower unit is off. Do I need to buy a gasket kit to reseal the lower unit and gasket kit for impeller? In my manual it says to lightly grease the lower unit with 2-4 c grease....any name brands to use I am kinda new to tinkering with my outboard. Another question I have it says about putting the engine in gear and then taking the jam nut off...i feel dumb asking but is that the 2 nuts (1 is regular sized nut and the other looks like a long nut like a threaded rod coupler) on the shifter rod (i think thats what it is called(it goesfrom the shift cables down into the gearcase. I noticed it acting up in the spring for a little bit after the gear lube was changed but it went away and went into gear like it was new. Im gonna start pulling it apart hopefully tomorrow before work. ill snap some pics when i get it apart. Any suggestions on where I could buy this part if it is the clutch dog? thanks again -Eric

Easy to take apart. Not sure if they sell the parts you might need here but buy here if U can..But they are available.
Take it apart and see what you need.
If the forward gear is shot it will be cheaper to buy a second hand lower from someone else.J

i looked at the parts on here and didnt see any clutch dog. I hope it is the clutch dog because i just dropped 400 on this motor 2 weeks ago and my wife will be pretty mad if i have to dump alot more into this engine. Ill start taking stuff apart in the morning
