Been lookin into Ford diesel trucks, so far have heard 6.0 has more hp but many more probs than older more reliable 7.3's. Is mileage the same, what other comments? I want dependability and durablity. Thanks, Heinz

The very early '03' 6.0 engines had some calibration problems. The numbers were actually very small. They are now fixed. No Issues at all the 04 model year.

The transmission behind the 6.0 (5R110) is vastly improved over the last model (E4OD) and has been absolutely flawless. It also offers five speeds and engine braking that the past trans did not offer.

I have a 2002 7.3. I've driven a 2003 6.0. Now that the early introduction bugs are worked out, I'd buy a 6.0. Seems to be quieter, has more power, and I love the trans they mated to it. I know 5 people that have 6.0's, all but one have had no problems, the 1 bought one of the first and had to have an engine replaced because it flooded the crankcase with fuel, but after they did that and recalibrated, it's been fine.

Hope that helps...

-Roger

DJ has it right. The 6.0 L had soft wear problems
when it was fist introduced and needed recalibrating
Anything manufactured after March /03 had been
corrected at the factory level. The new trany
with the tow hall mode is a fabulous transmission.
I have not seen a single problem with them.

I wouldn't say it was software calibration problems on the early '03s. Fact is they, Ford, is still putting at new flashes for all the '03 6L PSDs and I know they have put out flases on the '04's with the '03 motors. They are also, if not already getting ready to a flash out for the '04 6L PSD.

The biggest problem with, what people might consider early, '03s is not the software calibration, but the C94 injectors. Them suckers can leak fuel into your oil.

There are still other problems with them, such as oil leaks, Ford turning off the pilot injection with the newer software calibrations and such on the '03 and '04 motors.

Mine and many others feel that Ford is trying to fix engineering problems with software fixes. If it wasn't engineering, they wouldn't have had to make so many hard parts changes from the '03 to '04. There wouldn't need to turn off pilot injection to get rid of rough idle and romping. Wouldn't need to turn off pilot injection and so forth. The biggest problem I see with the software flashes are that so many folks over at the diesel stop complain about new problems after a reflash and some don't want theirs flashed.

My suggestion for someone looking to see what kind of problems the 6L PSD are having is to visit http://www.thedieselstop.com there you can see the problems, what's been done and how the fixes are coming also. What surpises me the most is all the posts on people filing to get a buyback or have already gotten such.
