Ford Locking Converter is making noise...

Got a 97 Mountaineer 5.0 AWD with 220k miles. Runs great! Lately I noticed that when the locking converter would lock or unlock (usually around 40-50mph) it did so with a loud thud. Sometimes when it releases its lock to let a slight amount of slip (usually right at 42mph while accelerating) it rumbels/chatters until it locks or fully unlocks.

Otherwise the trans seem fine. No leaks, no slipping.

Do you think the torque converter is just worn out and can be replaced or is it more serious and involves the trans as well?

BTW the truck has had an easy life, mostly highway miles and hauling kids.

Ayuh,........

What's the oil Look like,..??.. Smell like,..??....

The T/C,+ the Transmission share the oil,.....Usually 1 takes the other with it....

Oil looks fine, light and pink-ish on a white paper towel. Smells like it should. Its been changed (full flush) at least two times in its life. Probably due again.

I don't know if it will help with your amount of miles but, there is a product on the market called shudder guard that helps with the dreaded Ford torque converter shudder. This may not help you but it's can't hurt and I thought I'd let you know.

I'll look into the shudder guard product. I'm not much of a fan for "fix in a can" products, but at this point, I don't think it would hurt either. My guess is the wear surface has just worn out in the converter.

I checked the oil again this morning after driving to work, so it was well warmed up. Its full, still pink/red, and I don't see any flecks of metal floating around in it.

Anyone ever have this condition? How was it fixed?

I too have heard about the fix in a bottle. If memory serves me correctly its available through your local Ford dealer.

What LT said is correct, Ford has a friction free product you can add to the transmission. I would recommend servicing the transmission then adding the additive while refilling.

Hmmm...typically stuff that comes in cans and bottles never solves any problems, but it will make you feel good and forget them for awhile ;). I had similar symptoms on a Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme that eventually led to the converter failing to unlock. I took it to a transmission shop, they replaced a valve (~$200) and the problem was fixed. 220K: Good for you!
