Don't be a crab, Crab bait.... the guy is asking for help. Let me give some southern hospitality,
sea Wolf, what distance and terrain will you be pulling your boat? You definitly need trailer brakes since the rig weighs as much as your truck.
I pull the same wieght with a 4 cylinder S-10, slow but sure.

Don't be so vicious with your comments (never burn a bridge you may have to cross someday) to Crab Bait. Me personally, I consider this a towing question ;)

Your book answer is Ford Ranger 3.0L V-6 towing capacity Manual Trans 2200-2640 lbs and Auto Trans 3680-4100 lbs. Opt for the 4.0L V-6 and it is manual 2740-3560 and auto 5200-6020 lbs.

Toyota Tacoma 5000 w/V6
Dodge Dakota 3500-6450 w/V6
S-10 4400-5800 w/V6
Nissan 5000 w/V6

Of all listed the Nissan has the best resale and is not over rated. The other companies tend to inflate the values. This takes into account that an auto transmission is torque multipling.

Bob

CHEESE!!!

I go away for a few days and you guys are acting like 12 year olds!

The question belongs in trailers, but here is a good second choice.

A Ranger? 3000lb? NO WAY! Get a F150. :)

Re: ford ranger

JB
You've got the answer! I tow about 2000 loaded and had a Ranger with the 6 cyl. It was tough to tow the load with that! I now have a F150 W/ the 5.0. Nice and easy now!

Re: ford ranger

since you pull it so infrequently I would not spend the money for a gas guzzler. I share a similar situation with my S-10, have been doing it for 7 years and 85,000mi with out any problems at all. I live 40 miles from the lake and leave my boat there but pull it home to service and clean 10 or 12 times a year. Since I don't have a boat slip I have to use my truck every time I use the boat...3 or 4 times a week! Invest in some trailer brakes, they are faily inexpesive (Nothern Hydraulics)if you do it yourself. My first prioity is 27mpg since I use the truck more for work than pleasure. The money I save goes for more boating pleasure. Ford Rangers are tough little trucks.
