Hi guys,
I have a 68 Johnson 6 horse with the hand controlls, and a quick question..
The hand control has start, neutral, shift, and stop on it. uh.. Does the motor need to be off to go into the shift position?.. as it dies as soon as i turn it to shift. This is my first motor with hand controls, as my little 65 johnson 3 horse has the "on the motor slide thingy" Thanx

Re: forward, shift, reverse?

Hi ya drk...

Sounds like the engine is in need of a tune up. When the tiller control is turned to shift, this is supposed to bring the engine down to an idle that won't bang the gears in. If you have just pruchased the engine, and it's been setting a long time, the carb maybe gummed up and blocking the idle lift tube or....the low speed needle is out of adjustment.

Turn the needle clockwise all the way in until it GENTLY seats. Back it out about a turn and a quarter. Start the engine and let it warm up. Start backing off the throttle (on the tiller handle) and adjust the needle to keep it running. When you get this far, put the engine in gear and again adjust the needle for best idle in gear. If you have acheived this, turn the needle a little counterclocwise. This is to prevent a to lean condition at idle. Keep us posted as to your progress. Thanks.

Yeah.. you pegged it. It has been sitting for 3 years. I changed lower unit oil, and put in new pluse before i started it in the barrel. It actually runs very well it seems, but im no expert. It does have Lots of smoke when i rev it up, but doesn't stall or anything unless i try to put it into the shift position. Also, i think the prop turns even in the neutral position. Is that supposed to happen? thanx again..

Re: forward, shift, reverse?

You might want to consider doing a good tune up on the ol' girl, rebuild the carb (these older girls had cork floats in them), points, condensers and just generally bring her back to life. Would strongly advice a service manual for the job. You can get the generics at iboats store. These would serve the purpose. If ya want the OEM manual, check the site below for a reprint.

http://ww3.kencook.com/evinrudejohnsonmanuals/

Let us know how ya' make out.

Almost forgot....sometimes the prop will turn in neutral cause the new lube is cold. Something to do with physics. Don't ask.

Re: forward, shift, reverse?

I know that people hate the lazy mans way out, but do you think it would affect it any by just running it this season like it is, then getting into it over the winter?.. I sunk some decent money into a 3 horse i bought, and i dont have much left to buy tune up parts unless they are pretty cheap. Can you buy parts for this thing at say a napa?.. Btw.. this is by far the most usefull forum i have ever seen..

Re: forward, shift, reverse?

I would be careful about putting the engine in gear at to high an idle. I would at least get the carb rebuilt and get the idle right. I believe iboats store carries generic kits. NAPA does also. Just make sure ya' give the year and hp. when shopping.

Good LUCK!

Re: forward, shift, reverse?

Following outboard jim's exellent advice, I just got the carb kit for this motor, and very cheap to my delight... On the not so nice note, i also stored my manual in the same box with my lower unit oil, ( i know) and the section with the expanded view of the carb got 80% oiled and ruined. Im definately gonna do the re-build, but if anyone has an expanded view to share for a 68 6hp. johnson model cd25r serial j2910289, that would be great. thanx for all the help here.
my e-mail is drkilldrmz@hotmail.com

Re: forward, shift, reverse?

Found a manual for all evinrude\johnson 3 horse in the correct years. Would the carbs be the same for those two?
