You probably want to post the specifics of the engine/drive you are asking about. Mfg, year, model number, serial number etc...

It will be easier to diagnose.

It could be anything. A probable location would help. You will have to poke your head in with a flashlight to get a feel of where it is coming from. I have a 3.0 as well, and i developed an oil leak also. It turned out that a couble of bolts that hold the cam gear cover on broke, and it was leaking through there.

Saltwater boat? Check the oil pan for rust or loose bolts.
The only way your going to find it is by looking very closely at all of it. Get a flashlight if your indoors and look at all the areas that have a gasket. I think it will be easy to find it.

That happened to me once, I looked all over, found the dipstick slightly out of the tube, just past the o ring. Pushed it back in, cleaned up the mess, no problem! Youll want to clean it all up, then start looking. Good luck.

update on oil pan leak i pulled the engine and saw that the oil seemed to have pressured its way out on the port side and the starboard side of the pan -no rusty bolts rear and front seals are fine with no leaking.what could have occured to cause this? im thinking maybe the oil pump got clogged or something what doo you guys think -i havent pulle the oil pan off yet so im just guessing.

Ayuh,... There's Never any oil pressure on the pan gasket...

Is along the pan rail the highest point you see oil,..??

yup along the pan rail about 3 inch area on port and starboard hers a pic cant see it well but you can get the idea of the relative location

I painted a red arrow locating the area. any thoughts would be super appreciated

the oil sender showed no leakage in case you might be wondering.

I was certainly wondering!

Anyway - with as much rust as I can see I would strongly suspect that something has rusted out and is causing the leak. You mention the bolts aren't rusty... it isn't the bolts themselves that usually cause a problem - it is the pan itself.

Re: Found oil in bilge Area today

i ulled the motor what you see that is real rusty is the starter. believe it or not that rust bucket of a starter works and there is a bunch of rust on the block but believe it or not the pan looks spankin new its crazy how good the pan looks. I really am quite sure of the leak thru the gaket i just want to make sure i fix the reason why it built up so much pressure in the pan. i checked the rear seal-perfect front seal perfect . pan is freaken so clean you can eat off it. So with a visual i could see where the oil came out and it is from where i described . i got a n ayuh when i related it to a clogged oil pump some other ideas. by the way i lost my oil pressure while doing about 2800-3000 rpms i thought i had heard something but you know how loud it came be sometimes -i didnt realize what happened until i lost compresssion and limped to the dock.

No oil pressure,..??
Lost compression,..??
Thought you heard Somethng,..?? Like What,..??

Sounds like lots a holes in an oil leak story...

This is a great example of why all information should be put in the first post.

Re: Found oil in bilge Area today

:redface:hmm okay my leaky story - while boating i htought i heard something but was too enthralled with the 13.5 lb bluefish i caught so i wasnt really paying as close attention as i would have liked -yes i heard something release like pressure after finding the less than a quart of oil at the bottom of the bilge i concluded the pressure release was oil sprayed out from pan -i could visually see the spot on both sides of the pan near the lip at the gasket at the dock i verified this. I made a stop on the water for one last fishing stop still not realizing this had happened. I cranked her back up and noticed i had lost 1/2 my power hence limped home. what situation could cause this. By the way the previous owner is responsible for this engine being so unkept -Im just trying to get her back into decent condition that starter will be getting replaces as well as the oil sensor and various other parts

No oil pressure,..?? yup
Lost compression,..?? yup
Thought you heard Somethng,..?? Like What,..?? hard to say it was like a pressure loss

Ayuh,... I guess starting with a diagnostic tune up is what I'd do,...
Pull the sparkplugs, do a compression test, verify the igntion is up to stuff...
Find out Why the motors running Bad 1st...
What was the oil pressure when it was last running,..??
temps,..??
With 1/2 the power gone, what Was the motor doing,..??

Im going to throw some money at this engine this winter
i drained the oil and found no metal in the oil
ill be replacing the spark plugs new coil and wires and caat p
the engine is on the stand now i will check the igniton parts
oil pressure before problem was like 60 psi i believe
with 1/2 power gone i could not get up on plane basically
the motor was just real weak at that point i was a 1/10 mile from the dock so i didnt pull the engine cover off so i cant say but it didnt feel violent if thats what your asking.

That compresion test is going to have be done once the engine goes back in
i got some other things to do as well timing cover is being changed out
new coupler going on new starter -and im assuming when ipull the oil pump i might find a culprit but i guess ill find that out soon enough.

Re: Found oil in bilge Area today

Well a burnt piston with a hole in it will cause pressure in the oil pan. Better do a compression check first. Sure will also cause a loss of power.
