Free manuals?

I may be able to get an old Johnson outboard, 1967, 6 HP for free.
I will have to get it up to speed, has not run in decades apparently.

It would be nice to have a manual, but not gonna' pay big money. Can you folks point me to a source for manuals?
Secondly, What should I use for earmuffs for starting this motor? Would anyone know offhand the model and brand of earmuffs to use?
The model # CD-24S

thanks!

no need for big books simple motor

replace impeller gear case oil use new nylon washers
clean the carb orifices with carb cleaner blow dry if the float is cork and all crinkled install a modern plastic float.

coils under the FW may be all cracked... new ones needed
clean points replace condensers

nothing complex nice motor nice hobby lots of foilks to help out also at the AOMCI.org site ASK A MEMBER forum

how to adjust timing...

if you do decide to work (refurbish) the coils points condensers may as well do plug wires and boots... you will need some 7mm metallic strand wire (local bike shops may sell you some for $2 a foot or so. DO NOT USE CARBON FIBER PLUG WIRES !!!

keep the little mini rubbers on the coil/wire juncture and reinstall. screw in the wires on the high voltage pin route as they were. good to take a snapshot before undoing things ..anything actually :) .
lot of utubes on carb jobs. if you get hooked on this hobby this is what I use to redo plug wires ..but 4 feet is just $8 and you can reuse the old boots

OK, thanks, but now I am corn-fused!
-- you want me to NOT use the NEWER, carbon wires but instead say I should get 7mm strand from. . . a BIKE? shop. OH, I bet you mean a motorcycle shop, not a "bike" shop. . . right?!
-- basically, just making up a custom coil and plug wire set using the correct old-tech materials for cycles, right?

I get this WIRE core at a good outboard repair shop !!-----It should be easy to find WIRE core 7mm spark plug wire.-----Make sure you get WIRE core and don't read the fancy script about these NAPA wires.

OK. I believe I get it. . . wire not carbon core.
So, since you are so adamant, I am really curious now.
What is the importance of wire vs carbon core? Too LITTLE resistance from carbon vs wire? What is the important thing that prevents carbon core from working correctly?
thanks.

I use what was original to the motor.----It is easy to get.----I would get blisters on my fingertips in explaining.-----Other folks have posted this info already.----Use googl with ----wire core sparkplug wires for magnetos -----In your search.

carbon core is highly resitive and produces less radio interference from radiated High freq. energy.

it was from what I understand .. .a solution to limit noise in the A.M. band radios of the time....and today if you are a A.M. listener.

thanks to ohms law which specifies that the highest voltage drop is at he highest resistive point of a circuit ... the plug gap won and so did A.M. radios having to deal with noisy wires. !

Wire core strand wire for 2 feet is next to 0 ohms resistance and transfers max energy to the plug gap.

NAPA jibberish .. realy means LOW OHMs as in 0 ohms and I measured it , used it & works fine

yep, mentioning the AM radio interference helped me recall. . . thanks.
based on your info it appears they traded off more resistance for min. radio noise with carbon. thanks. Nice job on the engine wires!

that's pretty dang nice of you to do.
Just curious what you think of 15 HP Johnsons or others even. . . what should I realistically pay for one in good shape if I was to find one, Craig's list for example? any year. . . have a boat and no motor for it 14 ft.

The Johnson / Evinrude 9.9 / 15 HP models are really well built.------They are in demand.-----Many folks now realize how good they are.------But sadly many are now junk because folks ruin them by not knowing how to operate fine machinery.
