Hi All,
I have a 93 omc 5.8 with cobra drive. I converted to fresh water cooling .
My Question Is ; Should I still pull raw water though the outdrive pump or convert to the volvo style crankshaft pump and pull raw water though the hull? If I do should I keep the pump in the outdrive and "t" the 2 pumps together? Does the drive use this water for cooling too? Or Should I Remove the impeller in the drive and draw the water from the drive and though hull?
I've had Issues with eel grass.

I cant wait to hear opinions.

Howdy,

Is that a Cone Clutch drive or a Dog?

Buying a Volvo pump, hoses and fittings won't be cheap....I would try it with the drive pump. Cobra raw water pumps are pretty "robust" and can move a fair amount of water.

Closed cooling does work with Alpha pumps too....

Did you buy a kit or did you just cobble some parts together?

I have a cool craft kit. And friend Found Johnson pump in his garage for a volvo/ford crankshaft mount that never made it on the boat he sold and tossed it my way. I made a mount over the winter. I'm ready to plumb it and I'm concerned about cooling the drive.
I believe its a cone.

The water pumped by the drive mounted pump obviously does provide *some* drive cooling. I can't say if it would make any significant difference if you removed it though....

Is someone telling you that you cannot use the drive mounted pump?

The drive pumps have always been used with the closed cooled systems.
Of course, it's not recommended to convert a raw water cooled engine to closed if it's been used for 125 hrs or 1 year in raw water.
If you try, if it plugs up the heat exchanger with rust and scale on the side you can't clean out, you will understand why.

I've had the system closed since repower. I aquired this crank driven pump and I'm trying to decide how this should be plumbed. or if I should at all

So you're using your closed system with an engine that was already operating with closed cooling?

I don't think you'll have any problem at all using the drive mounted pump.

You can probably sell your engine mounted pump to defray your costs so far!
