Re: fresh water entry into 3.7?

One question though: If the drive works fine on the muff, how does it "feel" the load of the water if the prop isn't turning?

It doesn't, on muffs there is no resistance to keep the gears "locked" together, so they should just slip apart, so if the cutout is activating when on muffs, it is likely caused by the resistance of the cable (I think). In order for the gears to slip apart you need one of two things to happen, either cut the power from the engine (shift interrupt) or no resistance to the prop (on muffs).

The drive feels the load (resistance) of the water when the prop is turning, not when in neutral. That "load" is what keeps the undercut of the clutch dogs engaged. Precisely the reason for the shift interupt switch... to unload the clutch dogs so the unit can come out of fwd or rev gear and go into neutral. When on muffs, with no load on the dogs, the unit pops out of gear to neutral before the interupt switch is needed (no movement of the lower shift cable sheath) (gee....we're typing at the same time again!)

A little milky but actually is sludge free on top at least.

I may go ahead and pour some diesel in it to drain out. Just to be sure, what is the oil capacity of this engine?

I bet dropping the pan is fun? Gotta pull the rotor first I suppose?

Looked at the photos, that oil looks milky but I sure have seen worse, and it looks like there are some water droplets sitting there. I think draining it flushing and putting on a cheap filter and some cheap oil in and give it a try. As I recall it holds about 5 1/2 quarts with the filter. Beginning to think there was some water in there from sitting.

I don't doubt that Terry, but understand thus will be the this time I've put oil in it after draining, though admittedly I did not change filters bc I was trying to not spend any more than necessary because I didn't know what I was getting into.

I'll drain, flush with some fuel, add oil, them a new filter and see what happens.

Thanks again!

It just occurred to me that marine engines (like yours) have a dipstick tube that goes all the way to the bottom of the pan (to allow oil to be sucked out through the tube for an oil change) so the sludge in the bottom of yours may be plugging the tube and giving you those strange readings. Just a thought.

Aha! I like that idea! I will try to clean it somehow. I have a borescope at work also with color monitor. If the probe will slide into the 3/8 npt drain hole I may get a good look at the colon of this baby this afternoon lol.

Stuck the probe in the hole and saw nothing. Focus range too close and cam took a bath in milk.

I'll have to flush one last time Friday before parting her out and cutting my losses :(

Maybe she'll clear up a bit.
