Perhaps there should be a point in our working life where we feel our contributions have been such that were entitled to take it easy from that point on.

Maybe there should be, but we doubt if there is. The minute we start to relax on the oars, we begin to lose our value. Someone else, with more drive and ambition, could step in and do a better job in our place.

Lets face it what we accomplished yesterday is water over the dam. More important now is what we can do today and tomorrow. When the things we did yesterday and last year are more important than our ambitions for tomorrow and next year, its time to let someone else take over.

This may seem like a hard, unfeeling way to look at things but isnt it the truth? You cant win todays game on last weeks press clippings. No success is final no success can last forever.

People who enjoy success have to plan to keep on succeeding. As each goal is achieved, we must look for a new one and keep on scrambling. Thats what keeps life interesting.

When you feel youve got it made, watch out! Its the first step toward settling back into a pleasant, convenient rut. People who have it made are only one step from being has-beens.

One of the tragedies of business is the number of employees, at all levels, who have mentally retired. Theyre resting on their laurels, just along for the ride. They arent looking for new challenges, not interested in ways of doing things different or better, no longer much concerned about the competition or the customer.

Like anyone who coasts, theres only one place for them to go downhill. Keep alive, keep challenging yourself until the day you quit. When growth stops, decay begins.
