I have a 1981 9.9 johnson outboard with a pull start and I have a chance to buy a 1974 electric starter assembly and I would like to know if it would work on my 1981 motor.

Re: from manual to electric start

Welcome to iboats, Booms. I hope someone here has experience with your motor and lets you know. Those starters look the same on the exploded parts diagrams on the BRP site so chances are it will work. You would want to check to make sure it mounts on your engine the same. Print off the 81 diagram and compare to the 74 starter.

Re: from manual to electric start

Booms,

The starter and side plate will fit.
1974 used points 1981 is CD ignition(no points)
Your flywheel should be marked "C.D. Flywheel" on top, easy to see.
I bought the same setup for my 1978, also CD ignition.
My flywheel has 4 trigger magnets the 1974 electric start has 6.
I'm not sure the 1974 flywheel will work with CD ignition.
You can have the original flywheel machined for the starter ring.
LeeRoy Wisner's web site is very informative, everything is covered there.
http://www.sschapterpsa.com/ramblings/Johnson 9.9_15.htm
Right now I have both flywheels side by side, only 2 of the magnents are clocked the same in relationship to the crankshaft key.
I'm thinking of bolting the 1974 flywheel on & see if the motor will run.
Hopefully it won't hurt anything............anyone have more insight?

Bill
